Anti-circumcision: agree or disagree?

posted 3rd Oct
I read this as part of an opinion piece in a magazine today.

"To make an anti-circumcision law based on the child's inability to choose is insanity: a child by definition cannot choose anything -- whether breastfeeding or tonsillectomy".

Do you agree, or disagree with this statement?

No because in those cases it is for the child's well being, not for cosmetic purposes.

Eh...I think circumcision should be legal regardless. Last thing I want is at-home ciricumcisions being performed.

But I semi-agree with this statement.

Agree. Based on that fact alone would be silly. But there are a ton of factors being left unsaid.

My two boys are intact.

I agree. We as parents make choices for our kids because they cannot do it themselves.

Though I don't think there should be a law against circumcision.

Ugh, that's a good point...

The article is about a German court ruling that circumcision is a criminal act. Apparently, they want to criminalize circumcision in the future, because an infant can't give voluntary consent.

It does make a good point. We make decisions for our children every day that they cannot make themselves.

Then that quote makes even more sense to me b/c infants can't give voluntary consent on anything.

I disagree. It's a cosmetic surgery and should be done with the child asks for it. It won't be at 3 years old, but possibly at 15. If people use the surgery as preventative means, then girls should have their breast tissue removed to prevent breast cancer. Or their appendix removed to prevent appendicitis.

Something that is going to cause medical problems on the child (tonsillitis) should be done without the child's consent... because the parent is looking after their well-being. But 9 times out of 10, foreskin causes absolutely no problems if cared for properly. So using the whole, "Mother knows best. I'm gonna do what I want." is silly. It's still an unnecessary surgery.

I agree and have used the same argument. I am the sole decision maker for my son. I immunize but there are reasonable arguments both for and against. Same with circ'ing.

Agree and disagree. If its for medical reasons then yes it should be done, but I am strongly against it for cosmetic reasons just because it's 'easier to keep clean,' which IMO is bullsmurf.
