Sex offenders and halloween *D&D*

The city of Simi Valley, CA., is being sued by a group of registered sex offenders after passing a law that forbids them from decorating their homes for Halloween and passing out candy.

The group's lawyer says the law, which also requires them to post a sign announcing, "No candy or treats at this residence," is a form of branding, and that it violates their right to free speech. Simi Valley is one of several cities in California that have passed similar laws.

Personally, I don't think all sex offenders should be banned from passing out candy. So many things can get you the sex offender label, it isn't funny.

Peeing in the park/wood/in public
having sex in a car
consentual sex with someone who happens to be underage
prostitution

Why do people think that all sex offenders prey on children?

I think that if thier crimes were non violent and non child related, they should be able to pass out candy.

What do you think?

No I don't think they all do. My cousin is on the list but it was because e dated a girl when she was 16. She looked older and lied about her age and now he has to deal with the consequences. So I don't think they all prey on children

I cannot believe they aren't allowed to decorate their homes!   That's insane!

And I think "sex offenders" title should be fixed completely... peeing in public isn't sexual offence.

even peeing in your own front yard, with your back to the public can get you on the list... its ridiculous.

and I think its terrible to say that all of them cant pass out candy if they wanted to.
if its an actual predator, who has a history of preying on children, then ok, they don't need to have children coming up to their house at night asking for candy...
but someone who just got thrown on the list for peeing on the side of the road, 20miles from the nearest stop.... come on now...

I agree. There is nothing in this world that I hate more than child predators; but like you said not everyone on that list is there for assaulting a child.

However, if it were up to me, all child predators would be bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat. That's how I feel about that situation. There is almost an 100% recidivism rate amongst child predators. They need to be rid of.

I think it all needs to be reevaluated on a case by case basis

As I dont think all sex offenders prey on children, isn't just easier to make a law that concludes all sex offenders vs. pin pointing specific ones.

The majority of trick or treaters are in groups or monitored by parents or both...to be honest, I am not that worried about sex offenders on Halloween.

And it IS too easy to get on the list, so a blanket "if you are on the list, you are excluded" isn't exactly fair. Well-meaning legislation but I think it's misguided.

I think there need to be subcategories under sex offense in order to separate the different types of offenses.

I think it's too broad of a definition.

It's so unfair who gets put on the list. Sex offenders are harrassed constantly.

I personally don't like to take chances with children. there may be a few that don't prey on children, but there are MANY out there who do, and why should you give them an opportunity like that? For many sex offenders it's like an open buffet during times of the year like Halloween. Being a mother, I firmly think that its a very solid grounded law.

I agree with that. I think it's ridiculous that you're a sex offender if you peen in public. If we had been caught a few friends and I would be considered sex offenders.   We had some drunken nights where there was random peeing on the side of the road, down an alley, etc. One time we were in Canada and my girl had to pee so she squatted in some bushes when I realized it was police department. So we ran across the street and she peed in the bushes in fron of an apartment complex.
We totally deserve to not decorate our houses and not pass out candy.
