absentee fathers and their pride..

posted 3rd Oct
why do you think a lot of absentee fathers won't sign away their rights? they're not doing ANYTHING for their kids, the kids don't know them, don't call them dad so what is the big deal? Do you think it's a male pride thing?

why is it even necessary for the father to have to sign away their rights? i think if after 7 years the father is non-existent in his child's life then his rights should automatically be withdrawn especially if there is someone else willing to adopt the child.

ugh, its so frustrating!!

Amen honey. I'm pretty sure here though if they don't make contact for a year at all then you can get their rights terminated.

Most states won't legally allow it without someone to adopt the child in their stead (and that generally requires the other person adopting to be married to the other parent for X amount of time).

She mentioned before that she wanted her husband to adopt some of her kids.

I think it's crazy that absentee fathers should still have rights.

This. And mothers and fathers should be able to sign away their rights if they want. It's BS the states won't let them.

I don't think it has anything to do with pride. I think it's more power than anything. Even if they don't plan to do anything with their "rights". It's just knowing that if they get a bug up their butt one day, they can go to court for visitation just to make the mom's life hell. Even if he doesn't care about the kid/s.

Yeah, and I do, too. But most states are insane about it and will not terminate a father's rights, even if he's a POS, because of their notion that a child should have both of their biological parents in their life.

And many have crazy rules about who can adopt the child, and when. At least NY does.

I know that here in MN, if the father is absent for a certain period of time...the mother can run an ad in the newspaper of the last county he was known to live in. If he doesn't answer it within 30 days, his rights are automatically terminated and she can change the kids name to hers.

i guess I need to do some more research about this and hopefully it applies with me too. my daughter's father is being so stupid about it.

another question: if he doesn't think one of the girls is his even though she has his last name would I still need his signature?

If he's on the BC, yes, you'll need his signature.

And even YOUR phone contact with him is contact, and generally will not be seen as non-contact. Most states require YOU to also initiate calls in order to try and get the absentee involved... even though it's ridiculous.
