Upper Lip Tie
posted 3rd Oct
Im 90% sure my 3 month old is upper lip tied. I wish I could post a pic but from the ones ive googled it looks just like hers. Anyone else have kids like this? Could it be why breastfeeding is painful? What do you do for it?

my son had a tongue tie, and had to have it cut for proper breastfeeding. Not the same im sure, but I imagine it still affects bfing. Do u have lactation consultants in your area?

DS is 4 weeks and had tongue tie and lip tie. pedi didn't catch lip tie. I ended up going to a pediatric dentist and had lip and tongue lasered. the pedi office "snipped" tongue only and it didn't work.
fixing lip made juge difference in DS taking in too much air with his latch. both tongue and lip tie totally ravaged my nipples. have been working with LC and pedi dentist to correct all problems. go back to dentist on Friday, LC on Monday.
this has been my world lately. had first procedure at 8 days, lasered lip and tongue at 12 days. may need a 3rd follow up on Friday.

my son was tongue tied, but he didnt have an issue with BF like they though he would!! it could be the reason for the pain when BF, LO isnt latching right because of it, call your docotr or as a lactate consultant.

Both of my girls were lip tied, we just recently had both of them corrected.
It was VERY painful for the first like 6 weeks of breastfeeding...

my son had his first fix attempt at 8 days. second, at 12 days. so, yes.
just fyi, some pedi's don't agree with correcting tongue/lip tie. my LC warned me about that and she was right, mine didn't want to.

This is true! Many believe that it will stretch, which isn't usually the case.

a lot of it also has to do with the previously held notion about it causing speech impediments, so they automatically did it. since that logic has fallen out of favor, dr's don't want to do it unnecessarily, but what they don't realize is how it can affect nutrition and also dental health.
also, in terms of it stretching, I swear my son's got tighter, not stretched!

I didn't know anything about the lip tie my son had until we saw the pediatric dentist even though he was examined by the pedi. she explained that in her training she learned that a tongue tie almost certainly meant a lip tie. she was right. my son's was really bad. the difference in his feeding was remarkable once his was fixed. she said that she most often does them on older children whose front teeth come in gapped or wonky because of the tie being present.
she is now working to build relationships with local LC's because all that she learned shows how much tongue/lip tie affects BF'ing and the likelihood of the BF'ing relationship being abandoned if the ties affect eating.
my baby is almost the same age as yours. I can totally relate to what she/you must be experiencing. I think you will find immediate results if the lip tie is corrected. check on the tongue, too. one piece of advice, you need to make sure you retract that lip everyday after the procedure! just so that it stays loose and doesn't tighten down again while it is healing.

My son has it, we had a nipple shield for his first 3 1/2 months.
It hurt for like the first month.
Hes 6 months and hasn't had a shield since 3 1/2 months and nurses just fine, his top lip is usually curled under but it doesnt bother him or me.
