Meningitis

posted 3rd Oct
Need to get my son to the doctor tomorrow and get his shots. He is behind at the worst possible time.
There is a meningitis outbreak in my state. Some stem from treatment at an outpatient center and others are viral/bacterial. A college freshman, pre-k student and 9 yr old are among those who have died so far.
This is such an unsettling feeling. My uncle died at the age of 4 from meningitis. He wasnt vaccinated, caught it, and died 24 hours later.
My oldest has already had the shot, but I still fear sending him to school. This is all just horrible.

What is your health department recommending people do to protect themselves?

How old is your lo?

he is 2.
so far they are saying the ones from outpatient center are not contagious as they were from a procedure. outpatient center is closed.

the other one said it can be contagious, but they feel everyone is safe bc the boy is dead.
the prek kid and college kid....dont know what they said about them yet.

So he has had alot of his shots already, right? I can't recall the schedule at that age.
Try not to freak out (easier said than done) but it sounds like it's under control.

but i think in the last 2 weeks it has totaled around 15 cases. that is just too much bc the bacterial ones are contagious. that is how my uncle died.

I did a selective/delayed schedule with both of my kids so I am not one to get on anyones parenting choices about vaccines.

But I think he should have had a few before age 2? Or am I thinking of something else?

I thought meningitis was 11/12? I could be wrong though. I know there are special cases where you can get it before, but I think it's usually not given until around that age.
