Applying for SSI?
posted 3rd Oct
I’m filling out the Disability Report (I have to fill it out online before I go in for an interview with an SSA rep to finish the application process) for my son and it asks if the autism causes pain. I mean, it does—if he touches something hot just because, if he hears loud noises, etc—but is that what they mean? Should I answer “yes” or “no”? Opinions?

My son is pretty high functioning. SSI isn't Disability, it's just to supplement income--we don't have an income right now so it'll be all of our income, lol. But it's for people that work but still can't pay all of their bills because of a disability.

SSI is for disabled persons. So there is no guarentee your son will qualify. Even with autism, he could get denied the first round or several rounds and you won't even know if he will be approved or not for at least 4 months. Also, it's not supposed to pay bills, but cover his needs that will help him make progress towards how well he functions, such as therapy equipment, toys, or necessities of his, clothes, shoes food.. You have to keep track of what you spend what on.
As for your question if it causes him pain then mark yes. They will review all his medical records and talk to you in a phone interview to get detailed information.

any kid could touch something hot and get hurt... that has nothing to do with autism. its a pretty straight foward question, and no autism doesnt cause pain
