The one that Noob mentioned as well as other scheduling issues associated with the mom getting needed help after the baby (sometimes family help is only available at certain times) or a concern associatd with work. Some women are the bread winners and must establish as much certainty as possible.
And, some women feel like smurf and can barely function toward the end. Sure, some are just whiners, but some arent. I can't call it selfish if you have a family, can hardy care for yourself, cant care for your family/household and prefer to have the baby so you function. Of course, this is assuming that the docs have no reason to believe that a slightly early induction would be bad for the baby.

Still a selfish reason....but I don't think that selfish is wrong or bad.

For me there is 100% no acceptable reason to be induced if there is no medical need for it. I get what people are saying about scheduling and other family to care for and while I sympathise I still don't agree with it..... but that is perhaps mainly due to the fact that I come from a country where being induced is never done without a medical reason (unless you pay for it, but most people here have free healthcare)
I guess if you are not exposed to something then it becomes unthinkable to you. Here we are not exposed to elective inductions or elective c-sections (mothers here can have elective c-sections if she has previously had a c-section but women with no children or previous vaginal births can not elect for a c-section with no medical reason, or again without serious money!)
Similarly we are not exposed to routine circumcision so that seems horrifying to many brits. I guess your culture also plays a part in what you think is ok and what isn't.
On the other hand though I wouldn't punish anyone for being induced for having an abortion. Both are a choice available to some or all and I believe the choice should stay, whether I agree or not.

Hmm lets see.. "MY uterus, MY baby's body to do whatever I want with, MY choice, mine, mine, mine" Abortion, taking the chance to live away from an innocent.. Abortion is more selfish. It's evicting a baby from their home prematurely knowing the child cannot survive outside of their "home".

With that said, Inducing because you are uncomfortable is selfish, too. But that actually makes me wonder.. if people who are for abortions beleive it's always her body, her choice.. Why do they care if she smokes, drinks, does drugs or puts herself in labor at 30 weeks? I mean the "blob of cells" is a choice not a life so why would anyone care?

I personally do care about the unborn but for those who don't and are pro-choice, I can't see why anyone would care what she does while pregnant with that "blob of cells". If you are for abortion and her choice then you should also respect her choice to put alcohol and drugs into her body while pregnant, too. It's all about her!! Selfish!!

i dont think my OB would have done an induction for non-medical reasons. MAYBE for some exceptions. It's not commonly done here. I just want to make sure you understand that aspect. It's not like elective circs.

The USA is kind of portrayed as this big old money making place where any medical procedure is done for a price. The US version of the show 'one born every minute' paints it that way. Everyone seems to be "Oh I've reached 37 weeks and got tired so lets induce" or "yikes I've been in labour for an hour and no baby yet so lets do a c-section".
So I have that view of US medicine.
Sorry   hehe but I'm glad to hear it's not as extreme.

I'd be more apt to not be like "wtf" instead of the one that wanted to do it for tax money.

Why selfish? If it is no harm to the baby, and father wants to be able to see his child before going for a one-year tour, then how is selfish?

Because it's done for reasons that are for you...to make you happy. It isn't done because it needs to be.
And it can cause harm to the baby. Even if you're 40 weeks, you don't know that you're really that far along until the baby is born. For example when I had my daughter. I was induced ON my EDD for medical reasons but when she was born, they said she was at least 3 weeks early. Now had I had an elective c-section at 38 weeks, that would have put her really at 35 weeks and could have put her at risk.

But like I said, I don't think that being selfish is always wrong.

this is EXACTLY what abortion is though.. A woman is having one because she WANTS to and 99 percent of the time there is no NEED for it. I'm not for either but at least with inducing the baby usually at least lives.

If your for abortion, and believe her body and baby is her choice, why on earth do you care if she wants to evict that baby 2 weeks early? it's better than 28 weeks early.

Just for the record I am against inducing if not medically needed.

Abortion and induction end in two entirely different results, and I feel that they cannot be compared.
