kindergarten hell!!!

posted 2nd Oct
kindergarten hell thats right. So DD is in a very small school 175 kids in the entire school this year her school goes from pre-k-12. Her class has 10 students in it and every single night she has homework. And not just a little bit like tonight there was no joke 10 different pages plus a story for her to read and me to sign off on. does anyone else get this much homework in kindergarten or am I just crazy. Then come to find out they have 3 different 1 hour recesses. My thought is cut one of those out and do some of this extra stuff in school. I don't mind doing it with her its a great bonding experience for her and I. But by the time she gets home she has no interest in it and its a hassle. Help me out mommas.

Then to top it off every Friday she gets a letter sent home that says she talks to much and doesn't stay in her seat at all times. How can I fix this. I have had a talk with her tons and tons of times but same letter every Friday.

I would be talking to the teacher about the note at least. I think that much homework is ridiculous.

When I was in kindergarten we had to draw pictures of things that started with the letter of the week every Friday for homework, lol.

Not saying it should be reduced that much but that is way too much.

That's insane. I don't understand pages of homework in kindergarten.   And three hours of recess is ridiculous.

This is every night? My daughter is in kindergarten and every monday the teacher sends home a packet with homework in it that has to be completed by friday. It's normally 4 pages and a little story as well. That is way too much at that age. No help with the talking.

I have talked to the teacher on 3 different occasions about the behavior and all she keeps telling me is "she just has to get used to school." WTF how does that help me none. I ask DD what the deal is and she tells me that she doesn't get up without asking. So I don't know what to do.
The homework thing they are doing first grade work now and pre-k does kindergarten does first. They tell me its normal and it stays like this. My nieces go to school the next town over and my niece that is in kindergarten hasnt had any homework to do. I am at a loss here on what to do.

This is every night. Sometimes on Friday she will only have 3 to 6 pages and no story. But every night due the next morning. And if not turned in they get a 0 for everything.

I'm a school teacher and we are taught that kindergartners shouldn't have homework that would take them longer than 5 minutes to complete.

I imagine 10 pages of homework take more than 5 minutes... And 1 hour breaks?! Hell no!

You need to talk to the teacher or principle.

Wow, crazy. Is there any way you could switch schools. Sounds like it might be worth it in this case. There is no reason for a kindergartner to have that much homework they will burn out easily. Can you just imagine the next few years!

I held my son from starting Kindergarten this year BUT most of the schools around here are pretty good with homework... they pass out a packet on Monday & it's expected to be completed by Friday, not too bad. I'd much rather the homework for children be throughout the week, verses the weekend, ick! But WOW sounds like she is just getting bombarded with homework!! That's incredibly too much, especially for Kindergarten.

As far as the note goes.... I'd be speaking with the teacher. Ask her what she thinks the solution would be. Try talking to your daughter about it & seeing what she tells you, as to why she isn't listening/staying in her seat, and make sure it's all pretty accurate & that the teacher isn't just simply irritated with *her* in general.

The homework normally takes us an hour or more. And the recesses they say is so the keep a clear mind. The principle is that one that gave me that line of BS. All they tell me about the home work is that since she went to pre-k she should be fine with it....

Did you tell the teacher she says she doesn't get up without asking?

This all sounds weird to me.

I believe the teacher on the getting up and talking what not cause well she is hard headed and since we had the LO she has some serious jealous issues. So that part is going to be on me to deal with. But I just dont know how.

I'd look into a different school... or before you do that maybe you should talk to the other moms! See if you guys can get together and make some sort of protest about this.

The kids don't need that long of a recess, 2 or 3 5-15 minutes recesses is plenty. I think the teacher is being lazy and cannot think of learning activities.

I wish I could but to move her to a school outside of our county it would be almost 400 for transfer fees and I dont have that kind of extra cash.

Going to pre-k doesn't give her infinite patience and focus, wtf? Could you switch schools?
