Wow who smurf in your corn flakes. It doesn't work for everyone and what worked for us won't work for everyone. But I chose to do the natural way and it worked for us. My son is living proof that it can work if you want to put the energy into it. Don't freak at me cause of my beliefs.

Contradict yourself much?

I can't believe just because she has a kid who has it she thinks she's an expert on it. I mean, all of us have been saying from the get go it's great to try other methods first, but IF they don't work you should try meds because while they don't work for everyone they do work for most children and adults.

And then she comes in saying it numbs them and takes away their personality....ummm no. And that was just the first ignorant thing she said!

Yeah, it really does not do that unless there is a reason for it to. The only zombies for a couple easons- too high of a dose and/or their ADHD is actually a reaction to things like red dye and chemicals ( like an allergic reaction) hence why many doctors tell you try the other methods first because those are not like "true" ADHD. ( stuff I've even told by Doctors, therapists and have learned in my special education courses)

Oh and as far as taking away personality- no if things are going correctly the personality will be the same just not hidden by the hyperactivity or impulsiveness. First day on it my son was thrilled he could think. He is 5 and noticed a huge difference in himself. The crashes sucked, but meds are a puzzle for some families it can take months trying to find the correct med and dose ad time- it's an art lol

Yeah I mean doctors have gotten much better at diagnosing it but there is no way to like draw some blood and test for it ya know?
The way she talks makes me feel like either her child has it very mildly or is just over hyper. Not ADHD. Yeah 20 years ago they used to think you could grow out of it but since then have learned that is not true. You never grow out of it, it just morphs into different symptoms when you become an adult.

I personally agree with you but I do not know the child. But yes, it does seem that way. This is my course of study in college. Almost finished, but I've been studying this disorder for a few years now and have seen many of these " he is very hyper, he is ADHD" and it's like no, you can't just say that- there are so many factors involved in accurately diagnosing a child and one is making sure that you have eliminated environmental factors.

I don't know much about that because I never really had any issues on meds. I was started on 5mg of Ritalin when I was 5 twice a day. (I still remember the taste and the way they looked lol)
Then it just got upped slowly as I got older. I think I went from 10mg of Ritalin twice a day to 15 mg of Adderall once a day when I was in 6th grade, and then from 6th grade to 11th grade I worked my way up to 20, 25, and finally 30 which was too much for me and I ended up taking myself off when I was halfway through my senior year. I went from all As and Bs my entire life to failing and not walking with my class (in only HALF of a school year). I had to go to summer and night school just to graduate

See Ritalin is like the first drug they start with because its te safest. For some kids the crash is too much and that's when you start looking at other drugs that are longer lasting/ slow release/ extended release an so forth.

I liked Ritalin better than Aderall but like 15 years ago or whenever it was, it had just come out and it was extended release which was better for me because I always forgot to go to the nurse at lunch time to get my second pill. My mom was a teacher in my elementary school so if I forgot to find her, she'd come find me but once I went to middle school it was not working out very well taking 2 pills a day.

My daughter is in behavioral therapy and unfortunately it is not doing much at all. I just had such a long conversation with her teacher who informed me only 1 month in to the school year that if something is not done she will not be passing the 2nd grade.

I know that was not to me, but. :-(. I know exactly what that's like. It was last month that my sons teacher told us she was not sure what kindergarten he would move onto ( he is in developmental prek) basically she thought shear move him onto d level kinder if things stay the same.

Well one I know I'm not a expert but I figured giving a opinion on not medicating was alright. For you to assume I have not done my research and don't know what I'm talking about now who is being ignorant? So I guess maybe you should look into alternative ways of dealing with ADHD. It does work and you know I have put in a lot of time teaching and dealing with my child and I'm proud of who and where he is today. Shoot me for wanting a non medicated life for my child.

Omg
You're really annoying me now.

I never said it was wrong of you to not medicate him.
It IS wrong of you to assume that just because it works for him means it would work for EVERYONE else and to say it numbs children and takes away their personality. That is just not true and you shouldn't be giving someone advice when you don't know what you're talking about.
It's also wrong of you to say if you put in enough effort that it WILL work. That is absolutely not true. That's like saying "Oh well if you try hard enough you wont be bipolar anymore!"

Ignorant.

I did not mean to stir a big pot of ADHD stew. LOL Don't want you ladies criticizing each other just needed some input and I appreciate ALL of your input from both sides. I am just so frustrated right now because we have tried so hard to not medicate her for our own personal reasons. Now that I am thinking with it hurting her academics so badly and teachers recomending it that medicine might be a good idea to at least try my boyfriend like refuses to admit that she has a problem and is not on board with the medicine. I really do not know what to do. All I want is what is best for our little girl.

Yes my son is not what you call true ADHD! So maybe this is why it has worked for us.
