I mean that being morbidly obese causes an insane number of health problems that can kill you. I understand your pride in yourself as you are and everything but I would not be able to accept myself like that. You do care an awful lot about body image to plaster it all over the place don't you? So do I. But for you to say you have such a problem with the quote portraying such a bad idea, I think "happy to eat lard" is portraying a very dangerous concept. I understand the humor behind it, as I understand the humor behind the quote I posted.

Quoting Fat-and-Happy:" You would be wrong in this assumption. I have a long history that details why I have the body I have. ... [snip!] ... rate because the body is designed to protect against shortages (It's a complicated system and I'm not going to detail it here)."

I used to weigh 300 pounds and suffer from food addiction... it's not fun... especially weighing that much in high school. And I'm only 5 feet tall.

No one thinks you have to hate your body, but we do think that you need to accept that you need to be healthy.

Accepting your body for what is it = not trying to change it in most people's minds.

Dieting to lose weight can be bad and very dangerous... Especially with crash diets. Took me yo-yoing for a several years before I realized that. I was down 150 pounds after 9 years because I kept using crash diets and then binge eating.

Eating healthy and be active is important. But it's not easy... not at all. Most people need more motivation to continue to improve than they do to simply accept.

And even though I'm still overweight, I feel pretty. Beauty and health aren't linked. But even if we feel beautiful, we have to keep striving to better ourselves.

I don't know why these two things have to be on opposite sides of the spectrum?

I mean. . . do you disagree with the fact that people should love themselves regardless of their weight? Do you think people need to hate themselves in order to change? No? That's all the fat and happy stuff is. It's the idea of accepting that you are worthy of love at any size.

It isn't on the opposite side of the spectrum as this (well, as stated, I don't like THIS quote, but idea and the 2nd picture was great!).

One focuses on the emotional side (which is why it's now posted in health and wellness instead of weight loss and fitness) of self acceptance and body image problems, where the other focuses on getting you motivated to get moving. They are BOTH good, so I'm not sure why it has to be a one against the other idea.

The problem I have (this is not BG, this is in general) is that if you are fat and proud of that, you are self-accepting. If you are fit and proud of that, you are stuck up. I don't like that type of mentality at all. I thought it would be nice to have a post dedicated to encouraging people to being healthy.

See, I think if you're fit you SHOULD be proud of it! I know, it's hard work!! haha.

I don't think people are "proud" of being fat. They my be proud of themselves. They may be proud of how they look. But they are not generally proud of the "fat." The idea of acceptance is "I am what I am and I will love myself NOW. I'm not going to say 'I am deserving of love when I lose weight.'" That's how I see it. It's removing qualifiers from the right to believe you are beautiful and worthy of respect.

So, I mean, I'm working on my self confidence and I'm miles ahead of where I used to be, lol, and I'm proud of myself as a person. I'm also proud of where my fitness is because I've worked hard to get where I am. I may have a long ways to go before I'm where I'd like to be, but that doesn't stop me from saying "I'm beautiful now. I'm worthy of love NOW. I'm not going to decide that my weight determines if I'm happy or lovable."

That's really what it is I think, it's just removing any factors from decided IF you can love yourself.

And again, I think people should always be proud of themselves! You should love yourself no matter if you're fit or not! So if you've spent hours in the gym that week hell YES that's something to be proud of! You worked your ass off for that, and it's great.

I jsut don't think that's a requirement for one to be proud or love themselves.

I love the picture... I think it is beautiful.

The quote is what it is, and I was just stating my opinion of the quote. I can exist quite successfully with people who don't agree with me. I guess I may have gotten a little rantish, but it is important to me and my life experiences may have made me a little sensitive to certain issues. I mean, I've been made a spectacle in front of my classmates in elementary school, by the teachers. I didn't play basketball anymore because I didn't want to be ridiculed, not because I decided to be a lazy fat ass.

Being fat isn't, in and of itself, dangerous. Inactivity and poor health habits are dangerous, imo. I just don't think that self-acceptance, love, and respect should have qualifiers... so if someone doesn't want to do healthy things or get active they have the right to choose that for themselves but it doesn't make them any less deserving of love. They're still people.

The lard posters are my tribute to the fact that saturated fat isn't bad for you. It is simple sugars and transfat that are. ....And it was funny because of the whole fat and happy thing lol

I hope that I didn't convey to you that I feel that you are stuck up. If I did, I'm sorry. I support freedom to do with our lives as we see fit. If someone wants to diet and do all of that, it is fine with me. I just feel that, for me, dieting and waging war on myself is detrimental to my well-being. Which is why I've adopted healthy habits and let my body do what she may.

Your quote thing is a good idea, and I fully support it. I have with every other person who has done a fit and happy or a healthy and happy quote thing. I hope that you continue to do it. I just wanted to put my two cents in... and I love to talk about the issue. I mean, I've been looking for some juicy conversation lately to exercise my brain! I hope you don't mind. I just did in your thread what I want people to do with mine. By challenging each other, we grow and learn.

The concepts really aren't foreign to each other.

Danceswithfat (a blogger I read regularly) came up with a pretty cool concept called "the underpants rule" Basically, my underpants, or business are for me to worry about and your underpants are for you to worry about. People are diverse and they need a myriad of different approaches to achieve what they are after.

I don't think you were being ride at all. I started trying to live a healthier lifestyle because I was VERY unhappy with myself and have been for a while. I know for a fact that if I accepted my body the way it was, I would not be where I am today!

Couldn't agree with this more!! I want to be FIT not skinny and certainly not fat!
