Whooping Cough Vaccine

posted 2nd Oct
So, with the news that the whooping cough vaccine is to be given to expectant mums between 28 & 38 weeks, I was wondering if there are any ladies who have had it, or are soon getting it?

I'm coming up to 22 weeks and I'm so unsure. I have read up loads on it and would have assumed it would be fine as I believe it's the same vaccine that is given to babies at 2months old.

I got mine at my son's 6 week checkup but it didn't really affect me at all. My arm hurt a bit for a few days but that's about it. I'm assuming that if you were effected by the vaccine at all, the effect would be much less than if you were to get whooping cough in the meantime

I think I'm just concerned as it isn't usually given during pregnancy. I see my midwife in 2weeks so I'm going to get some more info from her.

I have a few friends who are expecting and they are refusing it :/

I mean are there any mums to be out there having had the jab *during* pregnancy?
Here in the UK, vaccinations are about to start for women between 28 & 38 weeks pregnant due to a rise in Whooping Cough related deaths.

I never got it when I was pregnant, but they gave it to DD and I'm glad I decided to let her get vaccinated because my brothers school has an outbreak of whooping cough. :/ I'd rather be safe than sorry...but now I'm starting to wonder why they didnt offer me the vaccine. lol

Yeah our babies here in the UK get the jab at two months old. Now they are saying though that getting it then is not protecting them enough. So us getting it in the later stage of pregnancy gives them the antibodies to fight it from birth.

I think I'd be more inclined to get it than not and worry. I know a lot of my pregnant friends also refused the Flu jab but I had mine yesterday.

Yeah, I think I would have rather been safe than sorry or have to worry whenever I passed someone sick with my LO.

I would have gotten it when pregnant if it was available and DS had his whooping cough vaccine a few weeks ago. The risks of not getting vaccinated for me greatly out ways the risks of the vaccinations themselves.

Same here!! I mean why refuse a jab when it potentially could stop you or your baby becoming ill. It adds to our immune systems without actually having to suffer the illness first.
I know the flu vaccine doesn't protect against all strains but it protects against the most common.

I got it after I had the boys. I'd much rather myself get a little shot, than for them to get sick.

I am going to get it...
But my Doc wants me to wait till just after I give birth.
I had a miscarriage last December (2012) so she doesn't want to take any chances with this pregnancy.
Im going to take my hubby in for it within a few days of babies birth.
He is a truck driver and it is hard to get him to a doctors office before they close. So while he is home with baby and I for a couple days I will take him to health department where they will give him the shot.
My kids are both up to date with all of thier shots so I know they are covered. And my mother in law went in last month to get one cause she is who I have watch my kids while I work.
