RSV questions.

posted 1st Oct
My daughter has been sick with a cough since the 10th, the past week it seemed to be getting worse. Brought her into a walk-in clinic yesterday when she appeared to be having trouble breathing. They ordered blood test, RSV test, and chest x-ray. She is RSV positive, has a fever of around 100, ear infection from the RSV, oxygen level is 95 at the very highest (runs about 88-92 when they check it), and her heart rate is rapid, she was also dehydrated because she was not eating. She's 2 days shy of 3 months old, and 10 pounds, she was born at 37 weeks. The ped. sent her to the ER where she had an IV put in her head and received fluids for dehydration for 6 hours then was sent home with no progress made. They said since she's on an apnea monitor at home they felt comfortable sending her home.

I'm going to see a different pediatrician tomorrow, will they want to hospitalize her? I thought that's what happens most of the time with RSV.
Also, I have a 14 month old and a 4 year old. I know it's very contagious. If they were to get it, would it be just as bad?

Thank you. Any RSV info would be helpful.

She also has reflux and is diagnosed with sleep apnea.

They sent her home??? Oxygen hovering 88-92% is low, and an apnea monitor won't really do much for their oxygen. They may want to hospitalize her. And it is contagious, you will probably get it too. However, in older children and even adults it is more or less a simple cold so you shouldn't worry about your other two. Your 14 month old I would keep an eye out but I wouldn't worry. RSV is definitely no fun   She may need another chest xray, they can develop pneumonia pretty quickly with RSV.

IDK how susceptible the 4 year old is, but the 14 month old definitely is, though to be honest, both have been exposed already.

DD had it when she was 4 months old. Because of her health history, they kept her overnight one night until she was doing better. We caught it just as it was developing which was good. BFF's DD had it around the same age but she's got some lasting health problems from it (breathing issues mainly)

Yes, that's what I thought too. After the ped had her transferred to the ER she wasn't seen by any other doctor, just the nurses. The nurses thought she should be admitted but when they talked to the doctor over the phone she said to send us home.

I'm hoping nobody gets it, all of us have had the cold symptoms and mine are starting to come back along with my 14 month old DD. So we'll see.

How much should LO be eating to stay hydrated? She isn't wanting to eat much, but her being so little I don't want to take any chances of her getting dehydrated again...
