Aspergers and school

posted 1st Oct
my son is almost 5 and has aspergers. Every morning it is a fight to get him to go to school, he fights, cries, fusses and hides from me. He finds every excuse not to go to school. I am scared of how much harder it will get as he grows... Does anyone have any advice on how to make this easier on both of us?

do incentives help?

My son will be 4 in January and he does the same thing in the mornings. I have to say "Myles, do you want some pretzels?" and he'll say "ok" and then I tell him that he has to get ready first and then we'll go get some.

It works about 75% of the time, lol

I'm with ya on this subject--I wish I could say more to help but i'm dealing with the same issue---only my son loves to go to school but it's a struggle for him at school, i get a phone call everyday saying that he's out of control... they think he's got autism/adhd.... and he's 5 too btw... but he hasn't been diagnosed yet... he goes to occupational, speech, and play therapy. I go to a school meeting on wednesday to update his IEP(individualized education plan)...because he's so out of control they are taking away his full days at kindergarten and starting him on half days in a smaller classroom.... I am not very pleased with the half day thing but... guess I can't do much about it :/

oh wow! I'd have a big problem with that. In general, kids with autism need that full day structured environment. Sounds like they're trying to get out of dealing with him all day. You're in Ohio? I'd call Ohio Legal Rights and ask them about that.

I will for sure   thank you!!! Never thought about that, i'm going to google the number. Yeah, that was my first thought too---is that they didn't want to deal with him all day!! BS if you ask me! You'd think ya know they have degree's in dealing with children they'd know how to handle him...after all, I have been LOL

Incentives don't work... some mornings are harder than others, this morning was a nightmare... when he gets there he no longer fights, just shuts down until i pick him up and then flips out again before we even get home...

kinda glad to see we arent alone in this... not that i wish it upon you ladies but i dont feel as alone lol

We are working on switching schools and getting him in a smaller class since we aren't happy with where he is right now

My brother will be 11 in December and Has Aspergers and is ADHD. Almost every morning is a fight. Does he sleep good at night? My brother has trouble sleeping and Has to take medicine for it, It works well but my mom doesnt want him to be so reliant on medication his whole life so talked to his OT about other options and she suggested a weighted blanket. He sleeps so much better now and doesnt wake up as grumpy. He still has his days but it has worked wonders.

what about a montessori school? they're really good for kids with autism disorders and some districts have a lottery system where it can be free. My cousins son goes to one because her district is not good and she couldn't afford private school and he is doing very well there and loves it. I wish my kids could go there but around here we have to pay $700 a month : (
It's a very hands on environment where kids learn at their own pace and was developed for kids with disabilites in the beginning

i know he definitely doesnt sleep enough, we go back and forth with melatonin, it always takes him hours to fall asleep and then he has night terrors and on top of that wakes up a few times at night. I have wanted to get a weighted blanket but i am afraid he wont 'accept' it because it doesnt 'belong' there... does that make any sense? he still sleeps with the comforter and pillow he had in his crib since he was born

I believe kids who are diagnosed with autism can get social security--- believe they give you around 800 a month!! I'm not sure how hard it is to get it or what other qualifications are needed but something worth looking into

how long has he been going to school? my son is 6 and has aspergers, it took him a whole month to get use to the school routine. But he still has some issues. Like today it took him an hour to eat a blueberry muffin. I wish I could give more advice but all I can say is time and lots of deep breathing. Hang in there mama

Yes that makes sence, My brother doesnt except anything thats not normal. My mom made His blanket herself and she took him to the store and allowed him to pick out the fabrics he wanted and let him help her pin it up and put the plastic pellets in. So it help a lot that he help make it. They are wonderful! Does he have an OT? My mom and brother sat down with his OT and they explained to him that he would sleep so much better if he gave this new blanket a try and he didnt want to at first but he came around to the idea.

I totally understand about not excepting something new.
