I let my LO suck my boob when he wanted. I would just let your LO suckle at your breast when she wants to.

My LO is 7 months and I still cant tell the difference lol. Alot of people say its bad to just shove a tit in their mouth to soothe them, but I think its fine, I like that I can soothe her anytime, and you really cant spoil an infant.

Haha my first DID use me as a soother, She was on me ALL the time, She would be so stuffed, She would be dopey and suckling, With the milk running straight out the other side of her mouth, But would carry on if i took her off, She refused to take a pacifier, So it was let her cry and soothe herself, Or just let her do it, I tended to let her do it until she was old enough to distract in other ways, I think she was 4-5 months before i got her out of it.

why not? if she's latching well.. she shouldn't be causing you pain. If she isn't causing you pain... why shouldn't you be used to soothe her? one of the best parts of breast feeding... you are ALWAYS able to soothe your baby.

but- in answer to your question...

listen for swallowing. At 2 months... you should be able to hear her suck and swallow. If she's sucking and swallowing.. she's getting milk.

if she's just laying there with your breast in her mouth, adn not sucking, then she's not getting milk and only soothing.

but.. more stimulation equals more milk. If you put her to breast less frequently... you may find your milk supply diminishes.

Pediatricians are not usually breastfeeding knowledgable. That, IMO, is horrible advice, & I would personally seek.a new pedi. It is completely normal to nurse frequently and on demand. Breastfeeding is more than just food, it is COMFORT! One tip for WEANING is to limit baby's time at the breast, which is essentially what you are being told. If weaning is not your goal, I would not recommend that advice. Many women are dissapointed when they fo not reach their goals, due to bad advice. I would recommend getting in contact with your local La Leche League. It sounds like you are lacking in actual support. LLL offers mother to mother support, & it can be so helpful & empowering to have the support of other mothers in your same or similar situatuons!

How do you feel about limiting baby's time at the breast?

If she isn't hurting you and your fine with her doing it why would you stop her? The only reason I stopped DD from comfort nursing constantly is because she wanted to comfort nurse on just the end of my nipple and she was bruising me. Contact the local La Leche League if you need support. Pediatricians will say anything to get you to stop breastfeeding because they want you to formula feed so they know how much the baby is eating at each feeding. If your pediatrician seems to be pro formula and anti breast I recommend switching.
