Here they have pre-k through the school district for special needs children of all sorts..my son (3 ½) is currently enrolled bc of his speech delay...he goes 4 days a week for 3 hours/day & it has helped soo much.

I'm sure if she's really far behind still in kindergarden they may move her to a special education classroom..with less students so she can have more one on one with the teacher.

& they will need the moms approval to test her & whatnot (IEP). But why would she need to see a psychologist? If she is just having speech issues she will just need to see a speech pathologist. Unless she's having behavior issues idk what a psychologist can do for her.

My son has speech issues.. he saw a speech therapist around 3 but only because I hounded the dr. they weren't going to do anything for him until he was 4-5. even when I went to the speech therapist she didn't do much.. she said they usually wait until they were a little older.. turned out for my son he had hearing issues got tubes in his ears and was still behind some but is now in preschool and is doing a lot better.. but I know at least here if there are issues the child would get speech therapy by the school if they were having issues

My oldest who is now 7 had speech issues and was referred by her doctor to go to a speech pathologist. The doctor also referred her to a hearing specialist to make sure that her hearing wasn't the issue. Your friend may need to be firm with the doctor and ask what they suggest and request that they refer the child to a hearing expert as well as a speech pathologist because it has done wonders for my daughter. I noticed her speech was not developing correctly by the time she was 2 so we switched her doctor who immediately noticed the issue and despite my daughter seeing a speech therapist in school 2 days a week is doing so much better. If the mother has insurance the school will just bill the insurance company, but in my opinion she needs to start working on it before things get worse.

The mother is doing a disservice to her child by not getting help and waiting for a school to speak up. Early intervention is the best way to fix any problem. And schools can't force treatment on a child, so even if she needs speech intervention the mother has to OK it. She needs to wake up and realize she needs help.

If she's on welfare..I'm sure she has medicaid for her kids..

& its free through the state here. There are private speech therapists here too..but most people go through the school district..& its free.
