Agree with this 100%. My brother was never punished and he has 8 kids and 2 step kids.

It would depend. In some situations they might feel overwhelmed, like cleaning the room, and I might help a little and offer direction. For the marker thing I'd do the same really, maybe say I'd give her a few minutes to think about it and leave the cleaning supplies there and come back after a few minutes and ask how she could make the situation better since it's not okay to draw on someone else's wall and just leave it there.

It's called dicipline, We don't pinish our children.
We get to their eye level, we explain in simple words, and we re-direct.
If that doesnt do it, We have time outs and as our last resort, we take things away, or have them do certain things, like clean, pick up toys ect.
It has always work for us! But atleast they are not scared of us, and they seem to listen very good.
* I dont want my kids to be bad when they are older, I was brutally abused by my own mother every single day as a child, until i ran away, So i dont want that for my kids.

I give time outs and don't spank or say mean things. I was raised in a house were I got hit for almost anything and was made to feel like a POS/POT so I afraid to breathe cuz i thought I was going to get hit or yelled at. I pushed people away and I liked to get attention from guys but I was more of a tease.. I never let guys touch me or anything I just liked the attention.
