epidurals and pushing
posted 29th Sep
just wondering... is there a proven correlation with having an epidural and having to push for a long time? same question for inductions (i.e. being induced and having longer push/delivery times).

My first labor I had an epidural and pushed for about 30 minutes or so. My second I was induced with an Epidural and pushes for about 10-15 minutes.

I was induced, no epi though
I pushed 4 times, under 10 minutes

I don't know about an epidural as I've never had one, but with my induction with pitocin I only pushed 2 times. But pushing is insanely easy for me. My son was pushed out in 5 pushes. For both I spent less than 4 minutes pushing.

I was induced with both my kids.My first labor was about 20 hours. Had the epidural for the last 8 and I spent about an hour pushing. My second I was in labor for about 10 - 12 hours and had an epidural for about 4 - 6 hours and she was out in 2 pushes. No I do not believe it is connected at all.

With my first I was induced, had an epidural and pushed for about 40 minutes (needed an episiotomy that one). With my 2nd I was induced, had an epidural and pushed for 4 minutes and 17 seconds (I only know the exact time because my mom recorded it and I didn't believe it went that fast LOL).

I went into labor naturally with my first. got an epidural, and only pushed through like 2 contractions...he was out REALLY fast

I've had an epidural 3 times. All 3 times I never had trouble pushing - With all my kids I've been able to push them out at the most 7 pushes - my labors have been long to short. Spanning from 41 1/2 hours all the way down to 4 1/2 hours.

I was induced and had an epi. I pushed for maybe 20-25 minutes tops

I had an epi, and pushed for 3 hours with a few 15 min breaks here and there... My Son decided to hide behind my pelvic bone lol. They said if he didnt move in 5 minutes there were puttin me to emergency C-section. They checked 5 minutes later and he moved, but I was so exhausted from being in labor for 23 hours, I ended up needing the suction cup right at the end, but he came out fine, and perfectly healthy.

I could not feel to properly push, that isn't everyone's experience, but it was mine. I pushed for 4 hours, and when she wouldn't come out, they used a vacuum....which led to excessive tearing. When I had my second, no epi, I pushed for around 15 minutes & very minimal tearing.

thanks for all of the replies everyone! I know nothing scientific about this topic and just wondered what everyone's experiences and thoughts were.
