5 year olds peeing themselves
posted 29th Sep
My son did great potty training. Recently he pees his pants and pees the bed. Why??? He gets distracted and I ask him frequently if he needs to go, I don't let him have liquids soon before bed.. and even after talking about it, will still not wake up at night to go potty. I'd rather stop doing all the pee laundry... any advice?

you may want to take him to a doctor. i had bladder issues as a kid and the signal that i had to pee reached my brain a little too late. DH cousin just found out that her lil girl at 5 yrs old, has a small bladder. that's why she has accidents.

Worst case scenario is kidney problems or a UTI.

My son wet the bed for over a decade lol. We went to the doctor numerous times and he didn't have any medical conditions and he was emotionally sound. Doc said it is predominate in boys to have issues with this. It has to do with their pitutary gland and how it signals the brain to hold it through the night. Rarely children but mostly girls get bladder infections and have trouble but that is uncommon. My son went through the wetting his pants too around 5 and it seemed to have more to do with preoccupation and a lack of control because he waited too long to go. He would be so into a video game or playing and get embarrassed. I did learn to not scold him all the time because I understand the smell and cleaning involved with laundry, but he would feel ashamed. I tried to do all the same things limit fluids before bed, make him go before sleeping and even waking him up to go but that still didn't do it sometimes. My sister is having the same issue with her six year old he had to wear pull ups for a while because she got sick of cleaning it up (bedwise). My son did grow out of it and would he kill me if he knew I typed this LOL MOM!!!. Good luck hope this helps.

My son is 5 and did great with potty training as well and just recently has peed the bed a few times and had one accident. We have a rule now that he can't have liquids an hour before bed and he has to try and go potty right before bed and as soon as he wakes up. That has seemed to work so far but some kids just have accidents because they either don't want to stop what they are doing (even when you ask them if they have to go) or just make it to the bathroom too late. The first time my son had a bed accident recently he had he was dreaming he was going potty lol. It may just be a phase or like the others said possible a medical problem like UTI or bladder infection.

Thanks girls! I bought him some cheap diapers for bedtime but apparently they don't hold a 5 year old amount of pee so I must put more money forth to some real night time pull ups. Little stinker. It's just like all of you have said, he is busy playing, preoccupied, or has waited too long. He is okay during the day lately but at night it never fails and we wake up smelling like pee. YEY! haha I remember being a kid and dreaming I was on the toilet. He does get embarassed and says "don't look at me!" and runs into the bedroom to change. Hopefully it's not much longer that he has accidents! He was so great when he first potty trained
