We review ours every time DH goes on deployment. It's one of my least favorite things to do.

According to a recent study, 86% of millionaires are self-made. Link

Why do you think they would have a hard time building their wealth back up if they've already done it once?

It's crazy, but then I have to remind myself that they were dumb enough with their money to buy a lottery ticket in the first place

Since you said "to all citizens", I assumed you were including the children of the wealthy too. There are more of them than there are theones who earned the money themselves.

And since the average age of millionaires (your criteria for "wealthy", not mine) is 65 and most of them spent their while lives building up their empires.

Though I suppose it depends on how much money each person ends up with. Maybe they'd still be millionaires after the distribution.

I didn't see that one, but I did see one about the guy who committed suicide b/c winning the lottery ruined his life and marriage. It was SO sad.

I don't see a problem spending a couple bucks on a lotto ticket, but I have heard of people blowing four hundred dollars for four hundred tickets in multiple states. It is ridiculous!

Having money might encourage those who cannot afford it to invest or go to school, but even when given opportunities like financial aid, grants and loans many still choose not to. I certainly do believe there are poor people, who if given some money will take advantage of it to make a better life for themselves. But I do not believe that the majority of would be able to continue their new lifestyle.

Wealthy people become that way by being fiscally responsible and not throwing money away on things like credit card interest and rent. For those who were very rich, I don't believe most of them will be able to return to their previous lifestyle because that kind of money comes not just from hard work and being smart about money, but is also the result of a good bit of luck. I do believe most would be able to return to the top 10% though. You can take a man's wealth and redistribute it to the masses but you can't do the same for his education.

Sure, but I wonder how much the average lotto winner has spent in loser tickets before they won big.
