I've only been doing it for maybe a month and a half and really liking it. I mostly have the prefolds. I didn't want to invest a lot of money into it if I wasn't going to stick with it. I bought a few Snappis, which are fasteners so you don't have to use pins, but honestly DH and I both prefer to use pins on the pre-folds. I have moved on to sewing a few of my own velcro fastened diapers and a few all-in-ones.

That was my motivation too! It's pretty cool...we've gone from a pack of diapers a week to one pack stretches almost a month! We still use disposables for nightime and when we leave the house, although some use cloth for those times too. It's just a little more convienent for me. I'll find some of my favorite sites for deciding how to wash and care for them and picking which ones are right for you. I started out with 2 packs of prefolds...24 diapers...and have since added maybe 6 that I have sewn.

This site I learned the most about care and deciding what type of pail to use.

This place has tons of stuff including reviews of different diapers.

This is where I figured out how to sew them. There aren't any strict patterns, but they give you an idea. I know it's possible to buy patterns, but thus far I've just been winging it and have done fine. Hope these help!

on your AIOs, where did you find the waterproof fabric? does it matter what kind of fabric, or just any rubbery kind?

So far I've only used fleece as my waterproof fabric. I'm not sure how this is going to work for summer though. The diapersewing website has a link to where you can purchase the PUL online. I've looked for it in fabric stores around me and haven't be able to find it. Once I'm more confident with my patterns I was planning on ordering it. It's like $8.99 a yard, I think. I just didn't want to waste it while I'm still practicing!

Just for starting out though, I would recommend getting a couple packs of the pre-folds and some of the little vinyl covers so you get an idea of washings and how many you're going to use. That's one part that stinks about the cloth...once they're wet, they're wet. I'm changing a diaper about once an hour. At first I was like "This sucks" But then something I read put it into perspective for me. The disposables may have this super-absorbant stuff so they don't feel wet, but they're still sitting in their urine. From a personal standpoint, I wouldn't want to sit with that next to me even if I couldn't feel the actual wetness...
