Maybe we should stop invading and rebuilding and start bbqing some Middle Easterners. The rest of the world thinks we are like that, so we might as well be.

Oh, and did you see that Japan and China are in a tiff? What happens if they take it a little further south to your neck of the woods?

We're only warmongers until they need us as backup. Then we're their best friend.

We kind of have a mutual defense pact with the Aussies. So, we would have to be involved and not necessarily by our choice. We honor the treaties we make with other countries.

Well maybe if in every thread we're in together instead of you treating me like an idiot and talking down to me you actually try and make me understand why America is so wonderful? Maybe instead of having a laugh at my obvious expense you explain why YOU love your country? I'm open to idea and admitting I'm wrong if given the right facts.

I love my country for countless reasons. Some of which are our incredible generosity and compassion. I love the degree to which people can succeed here. I love that immigrants (both legal and illegal) come here and completely change their lives and the lives of their immediate and extended family.
I love creativity and innovation that is born and nurtured here.
That's what immediately comes to mind and there are countless other reasons.

And for me its nice to see an American talking not about why they hate this candidate or that candidate, this policy or that policy ... but just explaining why they love their country. In my ... what? Two years on BG I don't recall once seeing anyone saying why they love their country for anything other than the individual

I certainly talk about candidates I dislike as I feel strongly that some are dismantling some key elements of what has made our country great. Exhibit A is the video in the opening post.

When in threads with you I promise to be more positive about what I am in favor of as opposed to what I'm against.

Its not that ... the main problem I've had in these type of debates is that sure I'm happy to admit I've got quite a biased opinion that I've gained from the world media and other sources. However the fact that instead of simply stating why these are misguided, people (and some I had a great deal of respect for previously) prefer to simply take the piss out of me and insult my country ... as if thinking this is going to somehow change my opinion on Americans.

Ah, yes, another WONDERFUL American attribute... unwilling to consider someone elses' point of view. Did you vote for McCain in the last election? Just curious.

Ha-ha, I can understand that feeling. I will be more aware of being critical of Australia.... Although I don't think I am a guilty.... At least not usually.

If you're meaning me, I wasn't taking the piss out of you or insulting your country. And if you took my joking about the location of countries as an insult or making fun of you, I deeply apologize. And I certainly did NOT jump on the bandwagon of whatever talk that was about how everyone relies on America when they're in trouble.

I personally hate a lot about the way things are headed in this country, and I would be happy to give you a list. But basically, one of the main reasons that I like Mitt Romney over Obama is that Romney has a plan, laid out, where everyone can see it. He's told everyone of this plan, to start our country on the road to recovery. In a sense, it's like Obama just cut a hole in the side of Santa's gift sack (the sack being the money our government "has" to spend) and all this money just came pouring out all over the place, and now when we need the money in the sack to spend on necessities, there is none. And anytime you put more money in the sack, the gaping hole in the side causes it to just leak out again. Romney has plans to plug up this hole.

People can bash Romney's personal beliefs on abortion all day long, but at the end of the day, Romney isn't anymore powerful than Obama. They'll hold the exact same office, same position, same everything. So if Obama is "just one guy who can't be held responsible for getting jobs bills passed," then what makes anyone think that Romney has the power to come in and just take women's rights away? And people can post quote after quote after quote all day long about what this Republican said versus that Republican and blah blah blah, but honestly, if I'm entitled to my opinion and you're entitled to yours, then why shouldn't they be entitled to theirs? It doesn't suddenly mean that that ONE person's opinion will cause the law to change instantly. There is still a due process that ALL laws have to go through, and I think people would do well to remember that when looking at these candidates and their platforms. They would also do well to look at the things the president HAS done and what he IS capable of doing in the future. We have a checks and balance system in place for a reason. So that no one branch has all the power. Executive included.

It definitely was not appropriate to just assume someone else is wrong and not consider their point of view, but I do have to say that I have encountered just as many Democrats who do the same thing. I believe they exist on both sides because I've seen it first hand.

Back during the Bush/Kerry election, I went to meet someone for coffee. And silly me learned on this innocent little coffee date why you NEVER bring up politics on a first date. I respectfully listened to his side of things and he "asked" me why I was voting for Bush, and as soon as I opened my mouth, he told me I was wrong. Everything I stated, he stated I was wrong about. There was no willingness to look at why I felt the way I felt or anything.

He's not the only one I've encountered that's done this, but he's probably the worst I've seen that came from the opposing side. So there's my story.
