re: Woman slammed for using FS at Kroger

Somehow I doubt it was this meek little, "Oh well, it was my mistake. I thought that these items were covered. Do you think you could ask the manager about it?"

I've been a cashier at Wal-Mart and I've worked in other various customer service positions including fast food. We're talking 99 cents for a dang taco, people. And when somebody thinks they're right, they get loud and angry and they make a scene. Not ONCE in all the WIC and food stamp transactions that I rang up that kicked back something as not covered did I have a single person concede to being wrong about the item being covered or not covered. Every single person argued with me and it wasn't even me! It was our registers that declined the item as not covered.

But for all we know, it really WAS an error and she was right. Humans program the computers, they can have errors. And berating or not, she could have been keeping her voice down.

I've seen the EXACT formula on a WIC check and the right size and everything not go through at the register. And the employee get nasty and tell the woman that she needed to get the right formula, and she had. She was in tears because she didn't have time to go to another store and she was out of formula. SO and I bought her a can of formula, then made a cashier call the manager up and told her what had happened. She checked the system, it was an error from when they had been putting the new shipment of formula into the computer that morning.

Smurf happens. She could very well have been in the right.

I have seen this story all over every news channel, the way she recounts her story, it is highly unlikely that she wasn't making a scene as she berated those employees. Her attitude and demeanor, and the things she said she said to them is completely out of line. If that manager said those things to her, her attitude does not excuse that. I am not arguing what he allegedly said was ok, but I think if she was so concerned about causing a scene or being embarrassed, she should not have treated those employees in such a manner.

Another customer that was interviewed by a local channel said that people had began to stare long before the manager arrived at the register.

I've had that happen with lots of things on WIC, unfortunately. Especially Welch's juice. It says ALL Welch's juice, and if it doesn't ring up, I just show them the paper with what is all covered and they have someone override it. Usually, it's new flavor that they might have just received and it's not completely in the computers yet for WIC.

I figured that's what happened. People like to argue their point and loudly. I figured people were probably staring already.

Meh, I don't have cable so I haven't seen any news broadcasts about it, but meh. I still think the manager needs to lose his job. Whether she was causing a scene or not at first, she may not have mentioned food stamps in the convo at all, and what he said was rude. She could have said "How do you know it's not covered? I've gotten it before and it was covered." You know?

Her attitude may have needed a check, agreed, but tell me you haven't had one of those days where you snapped at random people. Could have been one of those days where nothing goes right.

haha!

I am still waiting for someone to corroborated this women's story! I have heard other customers say she was loud and berating employees, but I haven't yet heard another customer report what the manager said? Maybe she made the whole thing up??! Maybe she wanted some free smurf?! Maybe he was not the nicest with his customer service, but didn't actually say anything of the sort to her? and that's why Kroger won't fire him.

Wow. Sounds like she brought all the attention on herself. And who knows? Maybe he didn't say it. But either way, sounds like nobody was judging her based on HIS comments since nobody mentioned him saying anything.

It has happened to me at WM. It was a cake from the bakery. Turns out...they put it in the computer wrong and the manager not only fixed it but gave me the cupcakes free for all the trouble...

I understand that it happens. But it doesn't happen that often. More than likely, she was trying to purchase something like Red Bull that isn't covered. Because 9 times out of 10, that's usually what it is. Somebody is trying to use food stamps or WIC for something that isn't covered.
