I tend to agree with this. I have three children that I pay for 100% on my own (well, my husband and I do). I don't need the governments money.

I am now a SAHM because my husband and I planned it that way when I got pregnant the first time. We have children because we can afford them. Not because we want them and can get government hand outs.

I am all for the welfare system helping people get on their feet and ect... I just don't see why the government should pay anyone to have children or to stay home with their children. If you can't devote the time to being with your child or to make sure they are properly cared for if you have to work, that is not our already broke governments problem.

I doubt you paid every bit you are getting unless its some minimal amount no where close to your actual wage.

In a perfect world, lots of things would be different.
There is no perfect world.
And, given the monumental problems our country faces, adding another entitlement program should get zero attention. Lawmakers that bring it up should be shot, figuratively.

yes....Its my own taxes paying me to be off from work. Every paycheck gets money off to pay into to have leave just like sick leave or short term leave.

I get 1000 dollars less being at home then working. So I am loosing not gaining anything.

We are allowed to take up to 52 weeks off of work with our jobs being held (law) but if your work does not offer paid time off you dont get it through EI you have to pay into it, and have worked so many hours to recieve it, if you have not worked long enough to get it, you can still take it off, but its not paid.

My company offered me 12 weeks PAID via my insurance for maternity leave. My husband worked for the USFS and got 2 weeks paid Paternity leave.

When I worked in Calgary,Ab, I got to take the year off and was paid 55% of my regular earnings. Then I moved home and never went back to my job when my leave was up (yes I called them a month before and let them know).
When I moved to the states I was pretty appalled that even the normal 6 week leave was unpaid for.

It's not "free money" though.

In many cases, it is through taxes that individuals pay. In Canada, we pay into our Employment Insurance and our parental leave is paid out of that.

It isn't unpaid for in all cases. It dependent on the company and the insurance program selected.
