re: Breastfeeding + Vitamin K shot?

posted 24th Sep
im on the fence about the vit k as well, this is my 5th baby and will be a home birth, and my midwife doesnt routinely give vit k, or the eye drops i was told that the eye drops are only needed if the mother has tested pos for an std. and that even with gbs the drops dont do anything to protect the child.

Yes, the eye drops are only to protect the baby from blindness if you have gonorrhea (sp).

Sorry, gonorrhea and clamydia. Sometimes you don't know you have either, and hospitals think it's better safe than sorry... but I'm 100% certain I don't have it, so we didn't give it.

Oh wow I need to ask about those eyedrops aswell. I never had an STD and I don't like giving my baby meds it doesn't need.

Unfortunately for these kinds of things, you need to request them to not give it to your kids. Sounds like they did.

Most hospitals it is policy

It's considered "hospital policy", and assume everyone knows. Sometimes they wont tell the parents, so that the parents can't refuse... And sometimes they even spout it off as law, so parents wont fight it. -shrugs-. Nothing should be done without parental consent, but when delivering in a hospital it's something you should expect...

Look into your laws. Here all you have to do is sign some wavers and they wont give them. you have to ask though. I have had three kids and none have ever had the Vitamin K shot or eye drops . To me the vitamin K shot isn't important since its to clot the blood and babies naturally start to produce this by 8 days old ( this is why in Jewish tradition they don't circumcise till them) . I have never come a crossed a single study saying it increases the risk of cancer.

Thanks for all the replies... also good to see that I am not the only confused mommy about shots and what not :s I think I will ask them to give me a complete run down of everything they are putting into my baby, just so they don't do any unnecessary crap.
