unfortunately a chip alone does little to no good for a stolen dog. Dogs can easily be taken into a vet and the "new owner" can say the adopted them ect. and change all the information on the chip with in minutes. The chip is used if dogs are lost usually not stolen and most companies don't question the information being changed.

Though I would like to look more into the gps thing someone mentioned previously.

You can always get their ear tattooed. Or if you have the microchip serial number it doesn't matter if they change the info, you're tracking the dog by the identifier, not by the info on it.

  my old family dog had a seriel number tattooed on the inside of his leg. Could only see it if you shaved the hair off.
