Night Time Potty Training (help!)

posted 22nd Sep
Read just the highlighted portion if you're too lazy to for the details

Tonight, my son asked to sleep with no diaper.
So, he's stark naked in his bed

Anyway---other than a few times since we started PTing and we've been out and come home after he's passed out in his carseat, he's never slept without a diaper on (he's daytime trained and I don't put a diaper on him to drive home in the evenings usually). Those times he's USUALLY stayed dry and woken up and come to my room (not the potty) and I've taken him potty and then put him back to bed. A few times, though, he's peed in his bed and I've had to spend 20 minutes cleaning him and putting him in our bed with DH and then washing his sheets.

When he wears a diaper, he DOES NOT STAY DRY all night. At all. In fact, he often leaks through diapers at night.

I know I need to wake him once or twice per night until he gets used to the idea of going potty himself at night.

He had a small cup of milk (4oz) at 6:30 and one at 7:30 (4oz again) during the cooking/eating portion of our evening. Then we cleaned up and took a bath---He peed at 8:30 before he did his night time routine of teeth/jammies/stories/kisses and peed again at 9:00 before I turned out the lights.

What times should I wake him tonight to take him pee?

I never really woke my son up...I either let him pee through and he'd wake me up when he did (or woke me up when he needed to pee!) Put a chux pad (puppy pad) in his bed at night for easier clean up. I also bought these padded underwear things. They don't completely keep things dry, but kids get used to wearing underwear and don't pee in them. I wouldn't keep diapers around either it can make the potty training longer because they know they can go in them.

id say 12 and then 3

I would also put a plastic sheet under his actual sheets so he doesnt ruin the mattress.

I have cloth diapers, so they'll still be here on the bottom shelf of the linen closet like always. He's been out of diapers except bedtime for months now. During the day he doesn't even need to be reminded to go---he's 100% independent on potty, including wiping himself and washing hands and making sure he cleans up his pee mess if he misses. Hell, in public restrooms now he tells me to wait outside so he can go himself

And I have a waterproof mattress liner that I'll put on tomorrow to save our mattress (I had no idea he'd go commando tonight). And I have a towel to go on top of the sheet. I don't like using disposable items if I can avoid it, so I am hoping to avoid puppy pads by just keeping him from going in the bed to begin with.

And he is commando tonight---actually stark naked. He just decided he wanted to be nude tonight--and I'm okay with that since I don't want the feeling of undies to make him feel ike he's in a diaper (he wears cloth, so they don't feel that different probably). He pees WAY more than those padded undies have ever held. I bought ONE pack of them when we first started PTing and tossed them a few days later.

We had something come up today---I usually wash sheets on Saturday mornings, so I was planning to put the waterproof pad on his bed today when I changed linens, but we were too busy...I'll be putting it down tomorrow---little turd surprised me by asking for no diaper tonight

Try not giving him anything to drink 2 to 3 hours before he goes to bed.
My daughter just learned how to use the potty a week ago and have had no accidents at night or during the day. Which is the best!

I DO stop drinks 2 hours before bed, have for a few weeks-and like I said, I had no idea he was going to want to go diaperless tonight, so I didn't get to plan ahead tonight and we were running later than normal for dinner and were rushed tonight.

My question was whether and how often I should wake him tonight.

And I'm glad for you that your daughter went from learning how to use a potty for the first time to fully trained night an day in a week---but how does that pertain at all to my post? Was it advice? Because you didn't give any information about your process, so I'm not sure what the point of you telling me that is as it does not relate at all to my questions.

Haha at the last paragraph, I love you! Exact reason I am of no help to you on this subject as Devin night trained easily on his own   I'm hoping to have as good of luck with Jordyn if she's not poopy when she wakes up she's normally pretty dry.

But what steps did you do wih Did you wake him at night at all? Smidget does fine usually if he's not in dipes, but if he is, he pees like its his job!

Nope, never woke him up and he hardly wakes up on his own either. When he first started training we had a lot of accidents on the carpet right outside his bed. He'd get up and the pressure was too much and it just all came out. He can hold it along time now. He doesn't go for probably 20-30 mins after he wakes up now.

At first the key was getting him to go pee as soon as he wakes up. I'd say for the last year he's had maybe 3 or 4 accidents at night.

Smidget pees as soon as he wakes up without me telling him. Has for weeks. And right before bed Without being asked.

I think I'm gonna have to wake him once per night to take him for a couple weeks and we'll be good to go. I don't think it'll be too miserable.

And the only reason I think it took as long as it did to daytime train him was ALL of those changes---moving, having/losing Deagan, daddy deploying, moving again, traveling so much, etc. he's been out of diapers during the day since May and has been mostly accident free since July, so he knows he needs to go on the potty. And he's been at least semi-waking when he needs to pee at night for a couple months---even in a diaper he'll sometimes wake me and tell me to take him potty (he can't get cloth diapers off when he's sleepy)
