Things I Dont Understand....

posted 22nd Sep
LO ( will be 3 september 30) is starting his special needs preschool monday. We have never really gotten a defenitive diagnosis for him , other than developmentally delayed, but the thing this, he knows the entire alphabet, can recognize any letter of the alphabet in any order, knows his numbers and can count to 15, and he knows his shapes ( square, rectangle, triangle, circle, and heart). I guess the main concern with him is his speech. I just worry that maybe once his preschool finds out he knows all of that, they could kick him out?? Idk. anyone been through anything similar?

My son will be 3 Oct 25, and knows all the same things but is extremely behind verbally.

I do not think my son is special needs. Is there some reason you think your son has special needs or just because he doesnt use full sentences?

My DD started at school last year when she turned 3 b/c she'd aged out of the birth to 3 program.

She's very bright as well and recognized all her letters, colors, and most shapes. But for motor skills (both gross and fine) she was 6 months or more behind. That's what they've been focusing on. Last year she finally learned to jump and walk up stairs alternating feet. We're still working on catching a ball, kicking a rolling ball, things like that. And her knowing letters/shapes/etc helped the other kids in her class.

She'll be 4 soon and is still in the same classroom. She's doing really well. People are always shocked when they hear her story

If he's going there for speech problems i wouldn't think knowing his alphabet would have anything to do with him no longer getting help with his speech. What diagnosis was used for him getting into that school, like what are their learning outcomes and planned support for him?

As far as a general delay, i'm not saying that he's anything but "normal", but often one year olds know those shapes and 2 year olds can count.. so in their eyes it's not that he's advanced on those things. And besides, those are such small parts of information, a lot of really troubled and struggling kids know those things, it's not much reflection on intellect or ability in the scheme of things. It's like the kids who, bless the poor things, have been trained to parrot back nursery rhymes to their mommy trainer at a year old, yet their speech doesn't go beyond that. It doesn't mean they have great speech or understanding, they often lack the ability to understand things that non verbal kids of the same age can understand.

So i don't think being able to do these things means that he shouldn't be able to get help and be in that school, if that's where you feel he needs to be. If he needs support in areas that are nothing to do with those things he is able to do, then it seems irrelevant, kwim?

If he's there for behavioural support they shouldn't take that away just because he is developing fine in other areas, that would be completely unfair.
