"I WON'T listen to the teacher today"

posted 22nd Sep
Cora has her second swim lesson this morning and she has announced that she will NOT listen to the teacher. She doesn't want the teacher.

Her swim teacher is AWESOME. She is also a SN preschool/kinder teacher so she is familiar with kids with asbergers/asd's (Cora is being tested for asbergers/asd's).

Cora just wants nothing to do with the lesson.

last week she refused to do anything other than swim laps and collect the toys from the pool.

She will only swim with a life jacket on. She is a good swimmer with it on. She has a basic stroke and can do lap after lap without getting tired. But she won't even get in the water without a lifejacket, which is what I am trying to get her to do, eventually. She won't use a floaty or arm bubbles or anything, just the lifejacket

can you bribe her? lol take her for ice cream if she behaves herself or something along those lines? The only sucky part is if she does misbehave and then gets no treat she might get cranky....

She doesn't respond to bribes or treats usually. She say that she'll be good, and even agree on it, but in the moment, it all goes out the window

yeah their impulse control is still maturing, its hit or miss with my daughter too. Does the teacher mind that she kinda does her own thing? Maybe kinda hype it up to being a big girl, learning to swim without help. She might see the other kids progressing and want to join in? idk though

Teacher doesn't mind, but it's only the second lesson.

And we're the only ones in the class

She doesn't care what the "big kids" do. She has never wanted to be a big kid

I just want her to get in the pool without a lifejacket but she is so anxious and scared she will sink, even if I hold her

if she doesnt want to participate and learn, take her out of the pool and go home / do something else. id give her another chance today to try, and make sure she understands her behavior today will determine if there are any future swim lessons. she just might not be ready for it. if all she wants to do is swim, then fine, take her to family swim hour and let her have at it. then she will enjoy it. her pace might be a lot slower than most children, she may want to swim with the life jacket for 6 months, and honestly in kid swim lessons theres not much you can teach with a life jacket on

She did supergood today.

She traded her lifejacket for an arm floatie and swam beautifully. She listened to the teacher and tried new things and even got her face wet

Then she had a meltdown for the last few minutes of class

but she slept like smurf and barely ate breakfast so she was tired and hungry.

All in all though, she had a really good time in class today.
