Literally almost in tears

I'm going into my sophomore year in college, and because I moved and other personal reasons, I'm doing online courses. I'm taking an English Lit class, a sociology class, and a health class.
I've never been a very good student, so I was super proud of myself for having 2 weeks of health homework done. Then my teacher graded it and sent me an email saying that because I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant and that because I'm having issues with my sciatic nerve, that I might have to be kicked out of the class. The only reasons I signed up for the damn class was because it's description was "a health/nutrition class" and because I need 12 credits to be considered to be a full time student, and that's the only income I get at the moment. Now she's telling me that because I can't walk a mile a day on top of 1/2 an hour of vigorous activity daily, that I'm probably going to be booted from the class.
She hasn't said a thing about the fact that there's other options, she hasn't said anything about me being able to do something different given my circumstances.
It's bullsmurf! And I can't do a damn thing about it

I'd call your advisor and the school.


How do the other students prove that they do the exercise?

talk to the dean of students and the head of the department. I don't know if there is anything that can be done, but they should be willing to work with you, if you have a medical note.

If its online why dont you just tell her you did it? Or get a note from your doctor saying you're cleared to do it?
I mean, it's not dangerous for a pregnant woman to walk a mile or do mild physical activities!

I could be wrong, but I don't think she can do that. . . I mean, what if someone breaks their leg? You said that in the description of the class it doesn't mention having to actually do physical work, right? I find this highly suspect. I mean, sure, if you were taking a running class you'd be expected to, well, run. But health/nutrition? I've taken that class we didn't have to do that.

If she presses I'd see about talking to someone above her at the school. Before that I'd just try to talk to her and explain that oyu can't physically do that (and provide a Dr note if you can). I just can't see how that would be okay. I mean, if I were taking math they couldn't kick me out or anything if I was unable to do physical work not normally expected in that class.

Try to get a note from your Dr as well, because that could help a ton.

if i were doing online classes, i wouldn't even tell anyone i'm pregnant. that's BS she can't prove if ANYONE is doing the "work"

If it's written into her syllabus, she is well within her rights. Several of the health classes I took in college required physical activity.

It can be for some women. Also, it's 1/2 an hour of vigorous activity. Most things don't count me as vigorous unless I'm jogging/running. Most Dr's tell you not to start new activities like running if you're unused to it when pregnant, you know?

I would contact the Dean of the college and talk to them about it, Im sure they will be able to contact the teacher and find an alternative for you to do. Also if you can get a note from your dr to give to your saying that you are not suppose to be walking that much.

I wouldnt have even told her you were pregnant. How would she know if you did or didnt do something? But anyway, just because youre pregnant doesnt mean you cant walk a mile. It might take a little longer, but entirely possible.

they cant,

I did online classes and I used my book for all my tests and everything lmaoo Bad student    

I have been pregnant twice during college & of course I got/get you can't finish this class. I talked to the higher ups and unless something happened that I was physically unable to complete the class...they can say all they want but cannot kick you out of the class. In Nevada instructors can't withdraw any student...only the student can withdraw. Talk to the head of the dept & get a note from your dr stating that you have permission to continue to take this class. Good luck

The teacher may not be able to, but the cats out of the bag now. I'm annoyed it's even an issue. I had a horrible pregnancy and was on bedrest the majority of it. Strict bedrest. I was barely allowed to walk to the bathroom, forget a mile, lol. However, I'd have taken an online health class. I wouldn't have had a 2nd thought about that being an issue. Giving her a different assignment doesn't negate her work, or make her do less then others. Her education in the subject doesn't suffer.

It's like going to a math class and then finding out that to pass the class you HAVE to run a mile. Um, what? That really isn't needed for the scope of the class. . .It isn't needed for you to learn what you need to learn.

I agree that if it was in the syllabus she should have seen that and objected at first (if she knew it would be a problem), but a Dr's note should be sufficient because it isn't like the requirement is needed for the class (IMO).

And she could lie, but I'd have probably spoken to the teacher about it and not have lied either. I'm pretty honest, and I'd never have figured it would be a problem.

physically she is saying she is unable to meet the requirements of the course. But the instructor should be willing to make reasonable accommodations, if her Dr. deems necessary.
