Birthing classes/parenting classes?

posted 21st Sep
My boyfriend and I just moved to Olympia and neither of us know anybody here. My mom and doctor both are encouraging us to do birthing (doctor) or parenting (mom) classes so that we can meet parents our age. Neither of us have any friends that are parents, minus my siblings...but I don't like crowds and he's socially awkward at the best of times. lol I keep meaning to talk to him about going, and seeing if he wants to...even if it's just to meet people who'll be going through the same things as us. But I'm not sure if it'd be a waste of time or not.
Any opinions?

I would say it couldn't hurt, especially birthing classes. I wish id had/known about that option when I was pregnant.

I've thought about it...but I haven't figured out how to yet honestly... lol
I love it here! I've lived in WA my entire life, and couldn't imagine leaving here. I grew up about an hours drive from St. Helens, so we were there all the time when I was younger.

GO!!!!!!!! It took me 21 yrs to go for my 1st time (born and raised there as well) I thought it would be boring, but wow, It is insane! As for finding someone on here i think you go to members, and click on members map..... I think you would be better off meeting people in parent classes vs. birthing classes.

I loved the childbirth and parenting classes I took, however, I didn't keep in touch with anyone.

I've met so many people with children similar ages to my kids. Some of them I knew from high school or sports I've played as a child or adult but others I have met since my kids were born (or have run into). Here are some of the places I have made friends:
- At the local park.
- Aquafitness - the one that you bring your baby to (though I met people at the prenatal one too, I just didn't stay in touch with anyone).
- A Facebook Group (Moms in 'town'), the group for my town is excellent!
- www.meetup.com (I haven't participated, but I have friends that have, there is a local meet-up group for parents of small children).
- Early Years Centre (a drop-in play group, but you could go to any playgroup or drop-in play place)
- LLL meetings (haven't gotten together with anyone outside of this, but I think it would be easy to make that transition)
- story time at Chapters or Early Years
- strollercise (a local store offers this for free, other stores around here arrange times to go for walks together).

I'm sure there are a lot more, and many of them are not for when you have a new baby, but there are plenty of opportunities to get out and be around other parents and children, even if you don't end up planning visits to each other's homes.

Thank you!   I may have to look into some of those... Are they both parent friendly, because my boyfriend desperately wants to meet people in our situation too

Some things have a lot more moms, but the playgroups around here often have at least a few men. Some of the exercise classes (yoga, aquafitness, etc) are really just for postpartum women, however there are often a few men at the strollercise  .

For the most part, those classes you sit in and work with your partener, you dont need to interact with other people there. We took birthing class, newborn care class and breastfeeding class....all were very helpful!
