First Time Miscarriage -- need advice

posted 19th Sep
I went to the ER last night w/bleeding & pain. They gave me a pelvic exam (which showed the cervix was still closed, gave an RH shot, refused me an ultrasound or heartrate check & sent me home with the advice to call my doctor in the morning.

My doctor sent me for an immediate ultrasound this morning. I had one last month b/c of spotting at 6wks 3days (normal size, with a heartbeat of 180). Today, they could no longer find a heartbeat, the baby looks only slight larger than last month at 6wks --- not the 11wks 2 days we should have been seeing --- and the gestational sac was misshapen.

Tomorrow morning, I am to see my doctor again to discuss options from here. I believe it will be to either allow the miscarriage to pass naturally or have a D&C. I've never been through anything like this, so I don't know what I should do ----- I've heard horror stories about painful miscarriages that went naturally and ended up needed a D&C anyway... but I can't stop feeling like a D&C is similar to an abortion. At my age ( 38 ) and that I have PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome)... we were lucky to conceive naturally at all! I'm worried that a D&C might cause complications for future pregnancies (if we are so blessed)

Anyone have any advice based on your experiences? I would appreciate any help with what questions I should be asking my doctor tomorrow as well.

Thanks so much for any help you can give. God Bless.

What convinced me to go natural every time:

D&Cs can cause uterine scarring which can increase your chances for future pregnancy complications or loss.

I'm sorry for your loss.

In my opinion, if you're already bleeding and cramping, then your body is doing what it's suppose to do. I would refuse a D&C for now.

I've heard that it can cause tons of infections if you choose to go ahead and miscarry naturally!!

I live in Guatemala and the process is very different... I cannot tell you what to do but if it were me I'd take the D&C. I have had two MCs, both are very painful and the first I had to have a D&C after naturally passing the baby (I was in my second trimester).

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a m/c in July. Everything was natural, no need for a d&c. Bled for about a week, never had any cramping with my m/c. AF showed up 4 weeks later and 4 weeks after that I got a BFP.

Make sure your dr checks your beta levels to ensure they go down. I went back every 2-3 weeks until I was down to 67 (3days before AF). Was going to call for another redraw for Sept but no need. Had them drawn Mon to confirm this is a new pg (since though it's rare after a m/c and an AF there COULD be residual hCG according to the doc I saw)

Im sorry for your loss..
In the end its your choice..ive had a d&c due to a missed miscarriage which went fine considering circumstances and have had 3 natural miscarriages. Natural is easier on your body in most cases then surgical

I was talking about it MAY cause infections depending how long it would take it to pass naturally. I didn't say it was a guarantee that you'll get one. That's why they offer D & C.. To make sure that get everything out w/ out risking it!

I went natural with all 5 of mine. The D&C is great for saving a woman from infections and what not. Honestly, your body will expell the pregnancy. If not, the D&C is a great tool. Don't think of it like an abortion. It isn't and honestly, abortion isn't a terrible thing either. There are many medical reasons that women have those early in pregnancy as well. Look at it as a medical proceedure.

At 6w gestation, it will be an easy pass. The hard part will be emotional not physical. A m/c early on is very similar to a period. The cramping can be a little more intense but, midol is great for it.

Sorry you lost your pregnancy

The loss is never easy but, what helped me with all mine was telling myself that God realized there was something not right and rather than give me a child that would suffer all its life, he took it back to protect it. If you aren't religious, you can go from the medical standpoint but, I took great solice in my "theory".

You can get infections.... You'r uterus may not clean everything out properly.

Thank you all for your input and condolences. My husband and I have told very few people --- we're still processing it.

I'm just worried about how long it will take to pass b/c I work as a CNA (which is a very physical job) and not sure I would be able to do it while going through this. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of sick time to use so not sure if I should use it now while we're mourning or save it for the actual miscarriage or what. I've never been through this and don't know a lot of people who have so I'm just clamoring for info on what's coming....

Also, I've read online about medicines doctors may prescribe to help that are less invasive than a D&C --- anyone have experience with that?

I think you've made your point. You don't need to scare the woman. You can get an infection from a D&C too.
