D&C is a surgical procedure meant to be used when a natural miscarriage is not possible. I've had 4 miscarriages where in carried 3-6 weeks past the point where baby passed and had no infections. It is possible to monitor for infection with symptom checks and ultrasounds if you want to avoid a D&CS without risking an infection!

You think introducing foreign objects into the vagina doesn't have an equal risk of infection?

D&C is a great thing for women who have retained tissue after a natural miscarriage, but with missed miscarriage it has the SAME level of risk to wait it out while being monitored as having a surgery---but one has a much higher risk of futer fertility issues than the other.

Please know your facts.

OP---if you're bleeding already, everything will probably be over within 48 hours and your doc will do an ultrasound to verify that you have passed everything (and possibly do HCG betas to be sure).

If you can't handle waiting it out, you can definitely schedule the D&C. Although I've heard the recovery is harder with a D&C, do the pain and bleeding may be similar duration either way.

Thank you so much for that thought --- I share it, too. I know there wasn't anything I could have done differently and I did everything I should have... so I know it was God's way of saving us heartbreak later on and less pain for our little one as well. We are not as religious as we'd like to be, but we do have enormous faith in God and his plan for us. I know he has something even better planned and that both our dads are keeping our baby safe in their arms

What happens? Have you ever even experienced a loss?

I don't know much about the medication, so someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is used to help your body start the process.. which is what your body is already doing. But again, don't quote me, I could be wrong.

I'm not trying to be a bitch or anything. I'm all for everyone informing OP of the risks and such. But to flat out say it's going to cause a ton of infections. Come on now. No one wants to hear something like that, especially if it's false.

OP, I apologize if I've said anything out of line.

Thank you, that is all very helpful --- I am going to discuss this with my husband tonight before we go in tomorrow. I appreciate the info

Once spotting started it has taken between 8 and 40 hours for mine. Less time significantly once I was really bleeding.

The pain of a 6 week loss isn't awful. A couple of extra strength Tylenol will knock it out (my doc gave me Percocet for my 9 and 15 week loss and it helped a lot).

Once baby passes, you'll bleed kind of heavily for 12-24 hours and then it'll be like a period.

Just watch for signs of infection (fever, pain, etc) and rest. I definitely wouldn't work (my sis is a CNA, so I'm familiar with the workload) until baby passes at least.

I said I've heard that it can cause infections, which is.. A fact. I wasn't saying anything negative. What was so wrong about saying that? Grow up.

No, don't worry... Vindictive or Peyton's Mom --- I know both of you are sincere in your comments and I'm not scared by the comments. I can see all points of view and I did asked for them, Peyton's Mom ---- and I also appreciate your sensitivity to my situation and emotional state, Vindictive.

It's a horrible thing for anyone to go through and emotions run high long after it's over. No harm, no foul for either of you. We all want the same thing -- happy, healthy babies. Thank you for your support

Glad I haven't upset you.

Sending you lots of healing vibes.

The meds are cytotec---I was offered this with my 15 week loss. There is some (fairly rare) risk of uterine rupture. It is usually used before the body begins the process (I discovered baby passed at 11w and carried to 15w before I even began bleeding, so my doc recommended it for me). It makes the miscarriage very fast (2 pills take orally 12 hours apart) but also more painful.

OP---if you go this route, ask for methergine in case you begin to hemorrhage (higher risk, but not common) and Percocet or other pain meds!!!
