I remember the whole Vonage thing. My dad tried getting it when we were struggling, and he said they only had it available in Lexington... which was forever away from us. Something like that.

Anyways, I don't even talk on my phone. Out of the 3000 minutes I use, SO and I combined use maybe 100 a month. It's not the fact that I need my smartphone because I just NEED to text and check FB, it's because it was the cheaper alternative. It's one of the only cell phone companies that work in our area. I didn't want to go and spend money on a phone, then buy a minute card... and it not work out here. I at least knew this one worked.

I'm rambling. Clearly our views differ. Phones ARE crucial. I'd hate if my kid were in school, got hurt, and they had no way to contact me directly. I'd hate if I was offered overtime at work when I needed it very badly, and work was unable to contact me to offer it. My phone is crucial. Period.

Times change, dear ;) Back then... it was acceptable and pretty well-known that not a lot of people had phones readily available. Now, it's pretty much a given.

I love it too! Our situation has changed alot since our rice and beans days but I still enjoy going to thrift stores.

We got our cable cut when things went bad, and I never looked back. I dont miss the thing at all and we were paying about 60 bucks a month with all the fees, taxes and extra channels (because the good channels always come with a little added cost). We are really living in a society based on entertainment and personal enjoyment. It isnt a bad thing in itself, but I think that sometimes, it leads to excess.

Our satellite and internet is free   Thank god. I don't think I'd be paying for it if we had to.

No texting though. I mean after all that's a necessity too.
Get a free gov cell phone and stop trying to act like you need to pay 50 a month for cell phone bill.
You aren't fooling anyone.

What happened to it takes a village, eh

Plus, my kids arent even in school right now, so theres no point in crossing a bridge that isnt even close. They get to stay with my MIL while I study

LOL. That's ass backwards. People are bitching because others are using cash assistance to pay for their phones. But the 'Obama phone' is federally funded and free to the user. Duhhhhh

I bet it costs less than 50 a month.
Take away TANF and give all those people that "need" a cell phone the free one with 250 min. a month.
Bet you still have people bitching.

We are paying out the wazoo for internet  . My husband is a computer programmer and some days he gets to stay home from his job to work, and he does side-contracts in his free time. He needs high speed and alot of bandwitdh and since there are only 3 companies offering internet, prices are really high. (we pay about 60 bucks a month, and THAT pisses me off). At least it's tax deductible because it's a work tool, but if he wasnt his job that thing would be cancelled tomorrow morning.

And whats Obama phone?

its called "lifeline" I think. and you get 250 free min a month, one per household. Nobody should have to use cash assistance again eh?

Oh damn. Yeah, internet and satellite is included with our rent lol. Our complex pays for the first cable box, and then any extras we pay for. We have one in our room and it's only $6 a month.

And I have no idea what Obama phone is. But people keep talking about it LOL. I'm assuming it's one of those federally funded phones that people can get. It's limited minutes a month for free.
