Newborn with back and neck arching. (please help)

posted 17th Sep
My DS is only 6 days old.
I've noticed a bit of neck and back arching when i hold him or right before i feed him and when i burp him.
It's getting so intense that he does it very hard and even when i don't hold him.
I'm afraid he might break his neck if i put him in a swing sometimes.

Also sometimes he fusses and makes uncomfy faces when he does this.

I looked it up on google and seen so many horrible things that i'm overwhelmed and just now calmed down enough to type this.
I'm so upset and scared...I thought at first it was just signs of hunger....but now idk.
i keep crying im so scared.
He has a dr's appointment tomorrow...

What does this sound like to you?
....
It's not normal...is it?

my daughter did the same thing...her pedi said it was reflux and put her on zantac and had me put rice cereal in her formula to thicken it...it was wonderful within a week the arching and fussing has stopped and she was such a happy baby. ask your pedi if it could be reflux causing you LO pain.

sounds like reflux. Try feeding him at a more upright angle (challenging if you're bfing but not impossible) and keep him upright for the next 30 min after eating. Feed smaller meals more frequently and don't put him into a seat (especially not a car seat) for 30 min to an hour after eating.

I don't know much about reflux...

Does it sound like reflux to you?

He eats 3-3/12 ozs at a time. (seems like too much, but its what will only satisfy him. formula.)
He has a problem burping, but he poots alot.
He just spit up for the first time the day before yesterday and has spit up mabe 3 or 4 times total.
Two times was a little and the other times was a good amount. mabe half an oz or so...

Its reflux..

Feed baby half as much as normal, but twice as many times as you would normally.. burp every half oz.. keep baby upright for atleast an hour.. and are about getting a wedge or something for baby to sleepon..

Never put them flat on their back if you can help it.

And breathe.. baby might have an episode it will scare you so much, with the pain they are going through.. if it happens use the bulb syringe to clear nose and mouth...

This! My neice did the same thing when she was born. She had reflux, doctor gave her script and after a few months she no longer needed it.
Never ever google, it will send you into panic everytime.

Baby doesn't have to spit up for it to be reflux..

Try feeding less ounces but more often.. stick a nuk in babies mouth right after feeding and see if that will pacify him.

Some ff babies need the whey protein broken down a bit more than it is in regular formula..

Could be silent reflux. When they have reflux that doesn't come all the way up to forcefully escape the mouth. My dd would hardly ever spit up but she had reflux combined with apnea. Because of the combo she would reflux and then when it went back down she'd forget to start breathing again, which is how we figured on the 'silent' part of that scenario. Sometimes pedi's will dismiss it if there's not a lot of spit up but be persistent and maybe do some research on silent reflux to see if it fits.

DS did /does that. He has reflux and hypertonia. Reflux is more common though. His hypertonia is due to complications during labor and delivery. He is 3 months and is on zantac for the reflux and doea physical and occupational therapy for the hypertonia.

Ill note too that every newborn baby has reflux. Every. One.

However when it causes severe pain (arching is a sign) then something needs to be done, usually a formula change, and when that doesn't work meds.

Please don't go the rice route until you absolutely have to.

yes and CB and brain injury and a huge amount of terrible things. Opisthotonus was a major thing i seen...

I'm glad I posted here on BG, if not I probably would of gave myself a stroke worrying.
I hope to God it's just reflux or gas!

Come to think of it...

When DD was 3 1/2 months old she started getting fussy and arching her back and never seeming full. (i thought arching was a sign of hunger.) and she'd spit up alot and want more food.
So we put her on rice in her formula and she didn't have a problem since. i didn't know it could of been refulx, but i thought she was drinking so much and spitting up but not getting full...if that makes sense.
I was unaware of delaying solids and what not, and a very new mother and knew nothing of babies.
