My husband and I are planning to do this for our 7 year old daughter. The bio-father has never been in her life and my huband has been there for the past 6 years and is the only father she has ever known. I know for Michigan that you have to be married for atleast a year and if the bio-father will sign over his rights to your husband then that will be the cheapest route (I think like $100 in Michigan) as opposed to if you had to get his rights taken away and given to your husband that can cost thousands. Good luck and I am watching this one

The first thing you will need to do is contact your county probate court, they will be able to tell you if you can do it yourself through the court house or if you will need to get a lawyer. Since the childs father is willing to terminate his rights this whole process will be a piece of cake for you!!! My husband adopted my, our, son last year. So we recently went through this. If I can be of any help or support feel free to get in touch.

My husband adopted my daughter last yr. U will have to go through a lawyer and the father will have to come to court and sign over his rights as well as explaining to the judge why he wishes to do so. U dont have to be in the state child was born. It costed us 1500 to do all of it and worth every penny. FYI: this took place in Tn

my husband adopted my son last month. we had a lawyer (a neighbor of ours, so we only had to pay less than $500). my son's father hasn't seen him in over 3 years, and he didn't show up to the adoption hearing. so....based off of that, the judge granted the adoption.

What if the father is willing to sign away rights but lives across the country so he can't come to court?

I just know that my ex had to be there...he didnt want to go but was willing to sign his rights over. The judge required him to be there.
