HPV

posted 12th Sep
I wont go into too much detail here, so to sum it up, I had a abnormal pap, and now it is normal. I just searched it and see alot about a colopsopy? I never had further testing, I know that if you get HPV its always in your system. At first when I had this "abnormal pap" I was told it was nothing to worry about, having HPV in your system the rest of your life is nothing to worry about? Hmm! Call me crazy but it deffinatly worries me.
What does it mean when it comes back normal?? the HPV is still in your system, correct? So what now? ....
anyone eles who has had this, what was your exsperiance, if it came back normal, did you have any further testing? Im going back in 6 months since I had a ambornal before, how do you know if it's cancer? ugh.

HPV is not life long necessarily. Most people can "get rid or it" by taking care of themselves, eating right, vitamins, etc. Your body will fight off the infection.

Just because you had an abnormal pap smear does not mean you have HPV. After an abnormal pap, they would then test the cells for the high risk HPV strains. I got an abnormal pap last month. They tested the cells and there was no HPV detected. The cells were of no significance at risk to me. It was probably because I had sex the day before my pap smear. I found out that sex the day before can cause an abnormal pap.

If it's cancer, it will be high grade, is what they call it. They will do more than just see you in six months, chances are they will want to freeze it off and whatnot. I had an abnormal pap when I was pregnant and after, it was normal. I think something like 80% of sexually active females will contract HPV in their lifetime, so it's super common. The important thing is to just keep getting your annual pap and make sure everything is good.
It doesn't always have to be HPV that gives you the abnormal, either. I've read that a weakened immune system (which typically happens in pregnancy), sperm and smoking can all alter the structure of cervical cells, bringing up a false abnormal. Maybe this is why the CDC is considering making paps every three years instead of one. Almost all low grade abnormal cells go back to normal with time...
Don't worry.

yeah that's what worries me, if it is normal now is it just nothing to worry about unless somthing comes up in the future? my last boyfriend and I broke up 3 years ago, my paps were always normal with him. I had a few partners after him and then when I was with my boyfriend now, is when the abnormal came up. Im a little relived now that it came back normal but it would just kill me to think I gave him a STD, because I know it can stay dormat in your system for a long time.

i have had abnormal papsmears since 18.
i had crappy doctors before and they ignored saying its usual for younger women to have abnormal papsmears.

I changed obs since then. i went in for a pap last august. came back abnormal again and have hpv.
i had a coloscospy done, and they found 3 lesions.
one of those lesions is severely high so i will be having the Leep procedure done.
a lot of people live with hpv and are fine. from my research and correct me if am wrong there are two known that cause cervical cancer. i think..
anyways if you experience bleeding after sex/ pain during sex/ unsual discharge it can be cervical cancer- those are some of the symptoms.

ETA: when my new OB got my medical records from my previous OBs it showed i had hpv. i was never told and didn't have further testing. I was just told it came back abnormal

Because HPV is a virus you will always have the antibodies in your system, but you will not always be infectious. I've had cervical cancer but no longer test positive for HPV.

Sorry to hear that, good luck with the leep procedure.Thats horrible they never told you that!! would it not be better to catch it sooner and have done somthing about it? and they just ignored it? Glad you switched OB's. They told me it wasnt a big deal and not to worry, but once I did some reaserch I quickly relized it is somthing to worry about, maybe not..but it COULD be a big deal.

I haven't exsperianced any of those things so thats a bit of a releif forsure.

I sure hope so. I got clear margins from my LEEP/cone biopsy but it's the kind that sometimes causes skip lesions (adenocarcinoma) so it's possible to have clear margins but there be cancerous cells further up in the endocervix. It's been three years though and I've been monitored closely with no sign of recurrence so I feel pretty confident that it's gone. I will be having a hysterectomy as soon as I have a child and then we will for sure know it's gone.
