What You THOUGHT You Knew About Mormons

Since I haven't been on for awhile and since the LDS faith has gotten a lot of attention in the media I thought I would make a post on some of the misconceptions that some ppm have on LDS members..aka (gasp) Mormons.

1. LDS members ARE Christians...while we may not have mainstream Christian docterine I.e. we don't believe in the Trinity we still believe in the Godhead. Non trinitarian belief is intact Christian.

2. We ARE allowed to drink products that contain caffien. Many Ppl believe that since our words of wisdom encourage us to stay away from coffee tea and strong drinks along with tabaccoand drugs that means were supposed to abstain from all beverages containing caffein...this is not the case only from those products containing large amounts of it..if however one chooses to do so for their own personal reasons that's fine...we are encouraged to abstain from ANY substance that we feel personally will do harm to our bodies.



3. We are NOT allowed to have more than one spouse at the same tim4


4. The Book Of Mormon is not a replacement of the Bible to us. It is equally as important to our Faith as The BOM is. It is simply just a companion to the Bible..another testament of Jesus Christ of a different ppl ..as Christians to assume that Heavenly Father would only want to speak to and single out one nation of ppl is wrong..God loves all his children so would want all his children to have his word and keep a record there of of it.

5.we do not Worship Joseph Smith. He was a mans great man but no diety. He was a Prophet of God who helped with bringing about God church and translating The Book Of Mormon. ( he didn't write it)

6.we were garments in place of or along with traditional underwear. We begin wearing garments after we go through the Temple and receive our endowments. We wear them to remember the sacred covenants that we made that day to our Heavenly Father. No we don't think they provide us with special powers or that if we wear them we become invinsible to harm. And no you cant see mine ;)

I may come off as completely ignorant but I am truly interested in the truth lol. I am black and my husband is white. Awhile back we were going to move to a city that is referred to as being "full of Mormons". My mother went all spastic and claimed that our children would be bullied in school for being mixed. According to her Mormons don't like black people. Even after I explained that we both had friends that are Mormon, she insisted that deep down they still don't like black people.
Could you maybe shine some light on the subject?

can I ask the position on birth control? I've noticed that Mormons tend to have large families and I wasn't sure if that was because they didn't support the use of birth control or if they just as a culture/faith supported the idea of a larger family. If that makes sense...

Also, why is the Temple closed off to the public? Is it just because it's viewed as a sacred place and nonMormons being there would make it less sacred?

What is going on right now to stir this up? I don't have cable so I'm not informed on current events at all right now -_-

I saw something on the news that said in the history of the church they didn't recognize black members, not much worse than the rest of our countries history. But we like to forget about that.

Completely false...while there are some racist LDS members the church itself does not condone rasicm many members are of different ethinticy

Thats what I figured. Same as any religion! Thank you   Oh and we have a big family too and everyone assumes that we are Mormon... Why do people associate big families to being Mormon?

We are free to choose to use birth control ot not..we our counseled to use protection so to not have children we can not care for.

Also I appolgize for poor spelling the kindle has a mind of its own lol

Oh and yes the Temples are closed off from general public because we view them and the work done within as sacred...even other LDS members have to hold a current temple recommend to go in

This is pretty much true..however the church did recognize black members however wouldn't allow for them to hold any callings within the church. Like you said this unfortunately was a reflection of the times and ppl..not the docterine of the church itself
