Resources for Pregnant Women

posted 10th Sep
I live in Ohio. I am preggo with baby #3 due in March 2013. I do not have insurance. I will not be accepted by insurance bc of my "pre-existing condition." Even if I were accepted, I couldn't afford the monthly payments. I do not qualify for any government assistance, even if I lied. How am I going to pay for this pregnancy, l&d, etc? Are there any links/resources/programs that any of you know of that can help the struggling middle class? I am desperate. Everyone keeps telling me things will be ok and it will all work out but it's not ok, I'm almost 12 weeks and still haven't been to the dr for a 1st visit yet. I need help, I need it quickly. Please and thank you.

Have you applied for pregnancy medicaid? Almost nobody is turned down for that

And if you are, then look into getting state insurance. They have lower premiums and stuff

This article has some good info...

Also call your hospital they can work out payment plans with you and if you pay before delivery you can get discounts.

Also why are you certain you dont qualify for assistance have you looked into it at all?

Can you call around to see if there is a teaching hospital in your area? They often offer prenatal/L&D care for those without coverage at a discounted rate and with payment plans. Also, maybe talk to someone in the finance/billing department of your local hospital, they might be able to point you in the right direction.

If you get a full time job with benefits the insurance company cannot consider it pre-existing (here there is a stipulation about the company having to have more than 50 employees though). I was 12 wks and SO added me onto his policy through his employer. Theres a thread on here somewhere about resources for uninsured pregnant women.

I would look back into the DSHS insurance. they are pretty excepting for pregnant women. and idk about pregnancy insurance, but for children insurance if you make over the "qualifying amount" you only pay like $30 a month.

We make too much money to qualify for any help...are you saying that I can apply strictly for pregnancy reasons?? I didn't know you could do that...

Medicaid or look into Catholic Charities. They do help people outside of their religion.

I don't qualify for medicaid because SO makes too much, just not enough for us to afford the monthly premiums for a private policy. You can look into midwifes and home births. The ones here run 2-3k for pre and postnatal visits...including delivery. They work on payment plans as well...or like someone else said talk to the hospital about discounts and payment plans.

Yeah it's only for your pregnancy and postpartum visit. You aren't applying in general. Sticktly for pregnancy. In my count the only adults who get insurance are preg women. But idk how Ohio works. I'm googlin right now.

Yes. I made too much to get any assistance and i reapplied when pregnant and got it. Then once you have the baby they cover you until your 6 week check up if im not mistaken. Then you get booted off.

I have called all OB/GYN's and hospitals around here...they DO offer discounted rates but the OB/GYN dr wants anywhere from 2,500 - 3k before your 5th month of pregnancy and hospital stays vary as well. I just don't want to have a baby and then turn around in debt $20,000
