Prime Minister Gordon Brown in Britan

posted 21st May
So Prime Minister Gordon Brown has had a victory in Britain by keeping the abortion limits at 24weeks of pregnancy. this is sick to me. I'm from Britain so I had been keeping an eye on it. A baby can survive at that stage if it were to be born so I just dont think its right to allow a woman to get an abortion at that stage. Anyway heres an article that was in my Scottish newspaper about it

Gordon Brown wins victory over abortion laws

May 21 2008 By Kevin Schofield
A CAMPAIGN to lower the 24-week time limit for abortions was crushed by MPs last night.
The Commons decision - on a free vote - was a victory for Gordon Brown, who had appealed to MPs to keep the current limit.
The Government also won backing for controversial changes to fertility laws which will allow same-sex couples to receive IVF treatment without the need for the child to have a father.
Following a three-hour debate, MPs voted 304 to 233 against moves by Conservative MP Richard Ottaway to cut the abortion time limit to 22 weeks.
Separate Tory attempts to reduce the limit even further, to 12, 16 or 20 weeks, had earlier been defeated.
Before the vote, the Prime Minister said: "The medical evidence has not changed and that is why I will support the 24 weeks.
"I respect all the views that people have on this matter. That is why there is a free vote."
First Minister Alex Salmond travelled to Westminster to cast his vote for a reduction to 20 weeks, while Tory leader David Cameron opted for 22 weeks.
The issue was debated as part of the Governnment's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill.
Those in favour of reducing the limit argued that medical advances meant some babies born less than 24 weeks into the pregnancy can still survive and so abortions at that stage should be made illegal.
Tory backbencher Edward Leigh, who wanted to see the current limit halved, said: "We believe that an unborn child of 12 weeks has undeniable human characteristics."
But Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said there was no evidence to warrant a reduction in the time limit, which was set in 1990.
She said: "Any reduction in the time limit will have a greater impact on teenagers and those who are very vulnerable. Is there any real evidence for change or is it just that members of the House are against abortion?"
On the changes to IVF rules, the Government said fertility clinics should only have to take account of the need for "supportive parenting" when deciding whether to provide treatment.
Labour MP Emily Thornberry said: "It's wrong to make judgments about families and tell one family they are normal and another family that they are abnormal.
"It is wrong to vilify single parents or discriminate against lesbian couples."
MPs voted 290 to 222 against a Tory motion which would have ensured a child born following IVF treatment had a father or some other male role model.
The Embryology Bill has been the most controversial piece of legislation introduced since Brown became Prime Minister.
On Monday, MPs voted in favour of allowing scientists to create part-human, part-animal embryos for research into diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's."

yes it is disgusting!! People never believe me here in Florida when I tell them that back home(Britain) you can get abortions up until that stage in pregnancy. It is sick to me. if you are going to do the abortion, like you said, put them up for adoption then!

Thats my thinking on it as well. If you carried the baby that long then why decide at that point to go ahead & do it? It just doesnt make sense. It's a developed little baby at that stage & you usually are showing by then & definitely can feel the baby. I've been feeling my son since around 18weeks. I can't imagine doing that to him. oh it just angers me so much!

i am pro choice however i think that the limit should be dropped to 16 weeks or lower unless for medical reasons (ie the baby would be born and never know anything but pain its whole life or the mothers life was at risk to continue the pregnancy both instances are very rare). I think that it is awful that it is still legal to terminate a pregnancy at that late a stage. i also think that women should not be allowed to have more than one termination (again unless medically advised) as i think there are far too many women that use abortion as a form of contraception

edited to add i think the reason behind a late termination in soime cases is due to the baby being the wrong sex which is disgusting

It's not guranteed that a baby will live at 24 weeks. There is a higher chance, due to medical knowledge and advancements, but it's not ever a gurantee. I support abortions up until 24 weeks, regardless the reason for going through with it.

If you aren't planning on getting an abortion, then this plan or change of law doesn't effect you.

its not guarenteed that a baby born at 40 weeks would survive so does that mean that they should allow abortions up until then?
