What Is A ....

What is a god parents to you? How often do you think the god parent or parents should see your child?(when they live close by) what should they do? and anything else you can think of

Nothing really. I thought a God parent was the first person a child would go to God forbid anything happen to the biological parents? My God parents were my Aunt and Uncle.

My sons' godparents are good friends of mine. Respectable people who we chose to forever be linked to our children. The godfather lives a couple of hours away (but visits often) and the godmother lives in town.

I am a god-mother.
I see her as often as I want, however I dont feel entitled to seeing her. I really jsut feel like an aunt to her.

I think it used to be like that, but it's not legally binding. My children wouldn't go to their godparents.

Yeah but shouldn't they be involed in your kid life so god for bid something happens they know and is comfortable with them. And in my family god parents pay for the 1st,5th,10th,16th birthday. And the baptism stuff .

Well yeah, but wouldn't the God parents be around regardless? Shouldn't it be a good friend or family member(s)?

God parents are supposed to lead a child in faith if the parents are lacking in the religion dept., traditionally. Now people use it as a legal guardian if something ever happened to the parents.

edit- If they are to be legal guardians if something were to happen to the parents, I would expect them to be active in the child's life, like an aunt or uncle.

A God Parent is someone the parents choose to foster their childs faith. To help the parents teach the child, make sure child is getting exposure and developing a relationship with Jesus. At least originally, in the Catholic a Lutheran faith thats what it was. They are selected upon baptism/christening. They take part in the ceremony. Lots of people pick "God parents" now with the idea they will get the kids if they die. But legally, that means nothing...

All 4 of my children all have different God parents, all aunts and uncles, but in our will we have a guardian named, my dad and step mom and if theyre unable to they will go to my oldest sister, so if anything does happen to both of us that is where they will all go. In our situation all of the god parents have pretty much adopted the god child as their own, they have the habit of going above and beyond when it come to b-days and christmas (not by our request, they do it own their own), they have special days together, they look out for the spiritual well being of the child (we'rea very religious family) and we hope as our children get older they have a very close bond with their god parents and feel comfortable going to them with problems or issues they dont feel comfortable talking to us about. It may not be the how people traditional view a god parents role but it works for us. Our childrens god parents see them atleast 2 or 3 times a week since we live so close.

God parents are not considered legal guardians if something happens to you child unless it is put into legal paperwork that those are the people the child should go with. God parents are for a religious up bringing of you child. Someone who guides your child to a good relationship with God and Jesus.

Our daughter's God mother is my cousin and she sees the kids all the time. Her God father really isn't around much anymore : (
Our son's Godparents live about 5 minutes away but they haven't seen the kids much with personal things going on and everyone being as busy as they are.
My brother is the legal guardian for our kids should anything happen to DH and I.

Since were not religious we look as God parents as extended family. I chose my close friend as a GM and my bd chose his close friend as the GF. they both use to live at our house for awhile and we grew very close to them. Their GM makes an effort to come visit them once in awhile and goes all out when it comes to their birthday/christmas and is that one person that's not blood related that I can trust with my home and kids to babysit. Their GF doesn't do anything for them.

it's who i want my child to be in the care of, should SO and I pass away.
