As a teen mother in the USA....

posted 2nd Sep
How would you rate our government as far as the resources that were available to you as a teen parent?
How available was
-child-care and resources to help pay for it
-education facilities that worked with you to complete your high-school education
-jobs that catered to your lifestyle
-Facilities that gave classes on avoiding domestic violence, money management, parenting skills, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Your responses are very much needed and appreciated!

The government wouldn't give me a dime when I lived with my mom..when I moved out I worked part time for minimum wage and went to school. I couldn't qualify for daycare assistance and I got $360/month in foodstamps. No welfare. I lost my job and could only get 200/month in cash assistance.

I know get childcare assistance but no welfare or foodstamps and I had to drop out of school.

I was never offered any kind of classes and told to just take whatever job I was offered, regardless of transportation or childcare issues.

I'm not a mother quite yet, but I've already gotten access to most of the information for these things through a nurse lady that the hospital sends to my house once a month. [I think it's part of planned parenthood but I'm not positive.]

The only thing I really haven't had help with is finding a job, but I haven't asked for that info either because I plan on being a SAHM for a little while.

I wouldn't rate my govt. on these topics though, but my hospital/planned parenthood gets a 10/10.

-child-care and resources to help pay for it - Didn't need it, I finished school online so I could care for LO
-education facilities that worked with you to complete your high-school education- My high school was making things complicated, we tried to set it up so that after I had my daughter the teachers could send work home and I would return as soon as I could but all but one teacher said they wouldn't so I opted for online schooling. If I would have stayed in my high school I probably would have graduated a year late, with online schooling I graduated on time.
-jobs that catered to your lifestyle- I tried getting a job when my daughter was a few months old, no one could cater to the schedule that I needed because I would have had to work around when my mom or SO's mom were available to watch LO because daycare is expensive
-Facilities that gave classes on avoiding domestic violence, money management, parenting skills, and healthy lifestyle choices- I didn't look for any of those things.

You said you didnt look for any of those classes, but do you feel you could have benefited from them?

A parenting class wouldn't have taught me anything I didn't figure out on my own or that my mom didn't teach me. I mean maybe it could have done SOME good, but I'd like to think that I've made the best possible choices for my daughter without them.

True...I will agree that things like that come alot more natural when you grow up with a mother that shows you how to properly parent a child.

17yrs ago when i was 16 & pregnant w/my first......the gov only offered childcare vouchers for while u were at work , not school. I had to work part time afterschool to pay for childcare while i attended school. My mom would watch DD while i worked & i would watch my siblings on the weekend so my parents got a break   I didnt qualify for any government assistance beside medicaid , since i lived w/my parents.....my school did offer 8wks homeschooling for maternity leave and offered once aweek parenting classes that were both very helpful. I attended vocational school and highschool at the same time....my cosmetology teacher was wonderful & if i needed to make up hours after school she would let my DD come w/me so i would have to pay extra daycare. When needed i utilized local baby pantries @ churches and pregnancy centers ( for diapers, wipes, baby clothes)
