Babysitters, i need your advice.

posted 30th Aug '12
My neighbor called me this afternoon and asked me if I would mind watching her kids a few days a week while she's going through training for a job she got. I totally don't mind, I just don't know what to charge!!

There are going to be 3 kids the majority of the time. Twin 4 year olds and a 1 year old. The hours will be very irregular, basically just working around her training schedule until she gets into her regular schedule (which will be nights, so she won't need a sitter.)

Anyway, would you charge a daily rate or an hourly rate? Also there may be a few times when I will also have her 2 older kids too, but if so only a couple of hours because they're in school.

I charge $4/hr per kid and the parent supplies all food/snacks.

I have 4yr old twins. They are pretty self sufficent and really don't need much care other than the obvious (don't let them run in the street ect..). Honestly, I would say like $20/ day. That is a pretty standard rate. Daycares charge around $3/hr per kid. I guess if you had to do meals for them bump it to $30/day.

I guess I should've mentioned that I will be watching them in her house. So she'll supply their food.

So for the three kiddos 20/day? That sounds pretty reasonable to me! But I'm a pushover lmao, I don't want to overcharge since I'm not really an experienced babysitter. I mean, I have my 4 year old, but I've never watched anyone else's kids for an extended amount of time.

Our sitter charges $3.50 for the first kid and $2 for each additional kid. She also provides meals and snacks. Although DD doesn't go there until after lunch, but she does have an afternoon snack. I have 3 kids that will be going there when I get done with maternity leave.

It is nothing different than you do with your child. Just make sure the kids are alive and unharmed. lol

I definitely would if it were a few hours a day, but its going to be between 8-12 hours a day. :-/ like I watched them for 3 hours twice this week and didn't ask for anything, I just don't want to become the free drop in babysitter....

I don't think I would agree to 12hrs but, I think between $20-$30 is a good amount.
