At my wits end.

posted 30th Aug
I really am. I don't know WHAT THE SmUrf to do, but something needs to be done.

My son is 8 years old and has cerebral palsy. Cognitively he is fine advanced even, physically he is behind. He can't walk, but his therapist's and Dr's think that's more of a motivational thing then anything else.

Well last year he started this new thing where he would smurf and piss himself IN CLASS to get out of stuff.

He didn't like math class? He would smurf in his pants to get out of it. He didn't like Science, he'd piss himself to get out of the work. And he would do it AFTER tell his aide or teacher " I don't like math. I'm going just going to poop/pee in my pants."..  .

Well NOW, it's carrying over into home. Except he doesn't do it to get out of stuff, he does it because he's to caught up to actually go to the TOILET AND SmUrfING GO. It's apparently so much easier to just sit there and smurf in your pants.

His Dr’s, therapists, and teachers all agree most of this is out of sheer laziness. He CAN walk, because he’s done it before with his walker, it’s all about motivation. If the motivation isn’t there he refuses to do anything. He’s been day trained since he was 3… So why now at 7-8 is he regressing? Because he’s to busy playing with a toy, or he doesn’t want to do work?!

I need advice on WTF I can do. I can’t think of a discipline that would work. I want to give up and scream at the top of my lungs, but I know that would do nothing at all. I need smurfing advice. I’m pissed off and at my wits end.

maybe put him back in diapers? Maybe that would be the motivation he needs to go to the toilet?

Get him a potty watch. We have one for DD. She loves it and it helps remind her to go. If he wants to act like a baby then treat him like one. Make him get up and go every 30 minutes until he goes without an accident.

His teacher and I talked about that, but I honestly think it'd have the opposite effect. I mean if he'll smurf in his underwear, I'm sure he'll have no problems smurffing in a diaper.

My mom mentioned making him go every 30 minutes to an hour. I think it might work, but it just kind of makes me angry I'd have to do that with an 8 year old. KWIM?

Quite literally in my case.

I feel bad, because I did lose my temper when he just pooped in his pants and I did scream at him. But I mean jesus christ... There is NO excuse for this. I know most of this is my fault for babying him for so much of his life, but I've really tried to stop it. But he knows when it comes to mom, if he doesn't do something I tell him to, I'll just come behind him and do it.  . I suck.

I see that. But it would be easier for you to clean up. and maybe the embarassment of diapers would motivate him.

Good luck momma.

I understand the thought behind this but I just wanted to mention what happened with my sisters cousins (on her dads side). It took forever for her aunt to get her two oldest to stop wetting the bed so she put them in pull ups at night (and restricting when there last drink was, etc) hoping they would want to stay over with friends or have friends over but they were 15 and still wearing pull ups at night..they just didn't care.
