My son was born 1 month premature, was still healthy for the most part. (nothing serious)

when he came home we realized he was not havin regular bowel movements. We called the ped. He saidits normal and some babies dont have bowel movements for a few days. He was breast fed at the time. He was always pretty cranky and the ped said it was normal. At 3 weeks i had surgery and it took a huge toll on my breast milk supply. So i started to supplement with formula. He became even more constipated. Then he was on only formula... Only had bowel movements once a week or less. We had to give him prune juice ofeten. And the pediatrician said it was normal. We went to another ped and she switched his formula to sensitive. No improvement still... My son was still unhappy and strained so much to poop. Then we switched him to soy. With soy he id having bowel movements every day. But they are hard and thick. He strains alot still. But hes much happier than before. He gets a few oz of water a day and eats the recomended amount of formula.

The other day he had a blody stool so we took hom to the ped. She said he had a fissure and thats its very common. And if hes pooping everyday there isnt much concern.
Excuse me but im not okay with my sons bottom being torn from pooping!

I need help figuring out how to help him. Everytime he poops he cries and pushes so hard. It breaks my heart to see him in pain and not be able to help him. I don't care if its common or not my baby shouldn't be bleeding at all.!

Any advice is welcome! I'm open to any suggestions.

rub some vasoline on his bum so the poop comes out easier. also try enfamil nutramigen. all the proteins are extremely broken down and easier to digest also its milk and soy free

I gave my son suppostories. My pedi told me how much to give, but I can't remember the dosage. You might ask pedi if you can give that.

I don't really have advice because I didn't have this problem. My heart goes out for you guys though because i know it's tough to see your little one in pain. Good luck and if it keeps happening maybe even get a 3rd Dr. opinion?

nutramigen! my son had the exact same problem and hasn't been constipated at all since we put him on it and it's been several months. it has probiotics which help a lot.

also..i'm a little surprised that soy helped him at all because when my pedi said to switch him to nutramigen for constipation she said not to do soy because that usually makes the problem worse. he may also have a milk allergy and that may be why going to soy made him not so cranky. my son has one and we didn't even know until after we had already switched to nutramigen but i'm glad we did!

and whoever said it is milk free is wrong...however the milk proteins (the allergenic part of milk) are completely broken down so that the body cannot recognize them as allergens.

my first question to you is... are you using powdered formula? if so, you may be overpacking the scoop
it's VERY easy to pack in too much, and if your baby is sensitive to begin with, constipation is totally possible
this happened to my premies, and i switched back to ready to feed
i know it's pricey, but it's the first thing i'd try if i were you

also, all the switching back and forth... can't be easy on him. i'd be very ginger on switching, introduce new formula one bottle per day, to make sure he tolerates it

as far as which formula, i SWEAR by neosure. it's amazing. my 32 weekers went from 3 lbs 2 to 11 lbs 6 and
3 lbs 9 to 13 lbs 3
in three months.

I suggested using kyro syrup to a mom once bc i used it for my daughter when she was a baby (now 5 yrs old) & i got chewed out for suggesting it. Knew i wasnt crazy lol
