My adopted 33 weeker, born to drug addicted mom, ?'s

posted 28th Aug
Hi, we are adopting our son and we have had him since he was 21 days old ! I have alot of questions that I hope yall don't mind answering. First, here is some background ! Baby J was born in January at 33 weeks gestation. His birth mother was positive for cocaine, marijuana, benzodiazapines, and opiates. He tested positive for cocaine and opiates at birth. He didn't have any withdrawal symptoms, and the doctors think he shouldn't have any lasting problems. He was 4 lbs and 14 oz at birth. He stayed in the NICU for 10 days. He is very alert, and very happy. He responds to his name, and makes little cooing sounds. He can sit up on his own when you sit him up, and he can stand up while holding your hands. He has rolled over from his belly to his stomach about 3 times. He used to hold his bottle but doesn't try anymore. He eats his jar food normally. I'm just wondering if this sounds about right for a 33 weeker? I'm concerned that he is not getting to a sitting position on his own or holding his bottle. When placed on his stomach he does make an attempt to raise his knees but is not getting anywhere. Admittedly, we have a tile floors so he doesn't get a whole lot of tummy time. He doesn't have any teeth yet, but he does weigh 18 lbs. The Dr. says he is caught up in height and weight with a full term baby ! Any input would be appreciated !

i think it sounds like he's doing great!

my baby was only interested in holding his bottle for a few weeks when he was around 6 or 7 months old. He just refused to do it anymore one day!

My daughter was born full term in jan and although she can hold her bottle (when she gets one) she doesnt like to. She sits up unassisted (we still have to put her in the position) She crawls (not on all 4's more just an army crawl)

He sounds pretty normal to me - my boy was born in December at 36 weeks (but the same weight), and is pretty much the same - doesn't sit himself up but can sit really well. He has started rolling around a heap lately but not crawling (doesn't really attempt it) but that's only been in the last few weeks that he started doing it.
Don't stress, he will do things in his own time and it sounds like you are doing a fantastic job as a mum :-)

What are his actual and adjusted ages?
It sounds like he's doing great! My youngest wasn't very interested in holding a bottle/sippy until she was about a year old, and I had to get her the ones with handles. I wouldn't worry about that milestone really since it's not really considered an actual milestone.

The tile floors could be what's affecting him sitting up on his own. My daughters both had the same problem because we had tile floors when they were crawlers. What I wound up doing was getting a piece of carpet from a flooring showroom (I got a piece cut from their scraps so it didn't cost anything) to use as a playmat, but I got it cut to 20' x 20' so they had plenty of room to move around. I liked it better than getting a rug because as they got older, they would eat their snacks on it and I didn't have to worry about them ruining a rug. Once they were up and walking I just threw it out. It really helped my kids with certain major motor skills that were impaired by them slipping on the tile

Thanks so much for all the quick replies! His actual age is 7 1/2 and his adjusted age is about 6 3/4 months. It makes me feel better knowing that some of your babies were behaving the same at the same age. We aee so excited to have him, our adoption will be completed in September!

I think he is doing great! Al babies grow at a different pace but yours seems to be doing everything good for his age. My niece is 8 month and at 6 months she didn't sit either but she is now officially crawling (as of today) and doesn't have any teeth yet. She refuses to hold her bottle because she just wants you to do it lol. She hates jarred food and much rather have rice and beans and other things with more texture. Enjoy him being a baby, it passes by so fast!

I say he sounds great momma, considering what his mom put him through.
My SOs mom drink alcohol and drugs. He is not forsure on what drugs because he was also adopted. He was born with club foot, fetal alcohol syndrome, deaf in one ear, cerebal palsy, mild retardation, and the list goes on!.
He was also born early, not forsure how early. Had surgery at eight months old to fix his club foot. He grew up fine. Had a few more surgeries as he grew for his club foot. His most recent one was in july.
If you look at him he looks like a normal person. He is not slow at all. At 25 he is doing great. He is just short 5'5 lols.

My baby girl is 18 lbs 5oz, and shes also 7 1/2 months. She was full term btw. She likes holding her bottle unless you act like youll hold it for her. You just gotta let it go and leave it up to them. Shes pulling up on stuff and taking small steps while holding it, but even though your preemie is caught up in weight, hell still reach milestones a little later than termers under a year and a half. So dont worry, hes doing a lot better than most preemies.

And don't worry about the teeth thing. My daughter just turned 20 months and got her first two bottom teeth about 2 weeks ago. No biggie. Congrats and it sounds like you are doing very good.   Thumbs up to you momma.
