why cant they dilate your eyes when your pregnant?

posted 28th Aug
i went to the eye doctor today because i used to have reading glasses a while back and they got all scratched so i couldn't use them anymore, i figured since i have insurance now it would be a good time to go get them back. i know that your eye sight can differ when your pregnant but i can tell that mine hasn't gotten any worse and the nurse told me they can still give you a scrip and you can just get another exam after the baby comes. well the doctor acted like he wasn't going to give me glasses just because im pregnant and they said that dialing your eyes is the only way to tell if they are healthy or not but they can do that when your pregnant. i know that was a whole lot of random info but they made me mad because they cant even tell me why they cant dilate your eyes when your pregnant she just said they cant. so i was just wondering if anyone knows why they cant, if it would hurt the baby or if you think i should go to a different eye doctor and not tell them that im pregnant.

It's because of the pregnancy category of the meds used.
I've always been able to get a script for my glasses or contacts even without getting dilated.

I would assume due to the hormones, Maybe dialating your eyes just wouldn't give a legitimate answer/result.

In my office, we don't recommend exams while pregnant because your script will change while pregnant and post partum. My eyes, for example, have gone from a -2.50 to a -1.25... so it can jump quite a bit. I'm just fortunate enough to work for an Optometrist.

We have a digital retinal scanner though , so dilation isn't necessary but you can choose to decline a further retinal exam. Its not.part of the refraction process.
