What happens if your cervix is completely gone?

posted 28th Aug '12
Yes i am freaking out over this! Since my cervix is rapidly changing as seen my the ultra sound tech and Dr. It was changing in front of their eyes and getting shorter by minutes.

What i want to know is what happens if you have no cervix at all. Do you dilate faster or what? I am trying to be positive about things, but its really hard when i have no family and no friends to talk to about things. I have only seen my husband 2 times since i have been in the hospital and I am worried!

Well, your cervix doesn't actually disappear. When they say it's getting shorter and changing, they mean you're dilating and thinning out. Once your fully dilated, you'll have your baby and they'll be nothing they can do to stop it. Have none of your doctors explained any of this to you?

Nope they have not.

My cervix is around a 0.5 to a 0.9 in some areas. I am dilated to a 2 1/2

i have no idea what this means. Since they said my cervix is rapidly changing, is there a change i can deliver this week?

Well, that depends. You posted 5 days ago that you were 2 1/2 centimeters dilated, are you still in the hospital or did they let you come home? If they stopped your labor and you haven't had a change since then probably not unless you go into preterm labor again. I went into preterm labor with my oldest daughter at 31 weeks, by the time they stopped it I was 3 cm dilated. I carried my daughter to 41 weeks before I went into labor again. You can be dilated for weeks and not go into labor. With that said, a friend of mine went into labor at 27 weeks, they stopped it only for her to go into labor again 3 days later and nothing they did stopped it. She had her son, he's still in the hospital but he's doing great to have been so early. Take it easy and just watch for signs of labor, if you have any, head straight to the hospital.

Its your cervix thinning out, dilating/effacing. Its normal for that to happen, however I don't know how far along you are. I was 80% effaced for two months. If your preterm they sure will be very worried about your cervix shortening and thinning out so early, and the shorter it gets and thinner, the sooner baby shows up, your cervix is what keeps the baby in

I am still in the hospital. My cervix is changing very fast they said. I get contractions like crazy all day. If i even get 6 an hour they stick needles in me with tributiline shots and i have already had a few rounds of IV mag. Still have not been able to stop my cervix from changing. Still contracting off and on. I am on bed rest too. Not allowed to leave or get out of bed unless i need to pee. I have a porta potty right next to my bed to use. My baby is doing great, but we noticed his diaphragm is still not going yet which means he has no signs of his lungs developing yet. I just dont know what to do. Is it possible i can have my son this week. Cervix is a 0.5 to a 0.9 and 2cm dilated. or more on that. they didnt check for dilation this time just checked my cervix.

I dont understand why he would just say very bad. The worst is you will deliver , right? Which at this point would mean the nicu but his chances of survival are good, right?

Ah dang girl :/ thats crazy. With all the information you've posted it looks like the baby will be born early, but thankfully your 29 weeks, I was in preterm labor from 19 weeks until I was 37 and then had him at 39. They will give you steroid shots to try and help him out a bit but it doesn't sound like he will be in for much longer. If the Mag and Terb isn't stopping the contractions, not much else can :/

My son would have a struggle. His lungs have no signs of developing yet and thats what worries them the most. PLus he is only 2 1/2lbs give or take in the area.

Yeah i have had the steroids and Pshots. Nothing is keeping this baby inside. They are even afraid to check for dilation at this point with me having very little cervix left. I am just wondering is it possible i could have him this week?

Ok, I must have misread. Have they given you steroid shots to develop his lungs? I had 2 the night I went into labor at 31 weeks just in case she came early. If not, ask them if they plan on doing it because yes, if they can't stop your labor and it doesn't stop on it's own, you'll deliver him. As for exactly when, I can't really say, it just depends on how fast you labor. He'll be in the NICU for a while, but at almost 30 weeks his chances of surviving are really good. As scary as all of this is, try not to stress mama. Stressing will only make things worse.

Definately possible with the contractions not stopping and your cervix dilating this fast. I would say in a couple of days, especially since they are too scared to even check you   Goodluck
