My oldest has a 30% speech delay which has caused a cognitive delay. Our youngest is doing amazing surpassing his milestones

See, our 3 year old has these significant delays in communication and social/emotional. Our 15 month old, I thought, was on par with his age. But, in reading about other 15 month old verbal skills compared to his....now I'm freaking out that he's going to have these delays, too.

O (3 year old) didn't learn his name until well after he was 2. he didn't understand "stop" or "come" or "bring me this" until around the same time he learned his name, at, like, two and a half.

X (15 month old) knows his name, he understands a lot more commands, but he seems to be seriously lacking verbally.

I'm just becoming concerned now :/

Joey doesn't have delays, but Im almost positive he has Aspergers, and he'll be evaluated soon for it.
He didn't talk much at all until he turned 2. With Bri, she seems to be much more advanced than he was at this age.

I know it CAN be passed on like that, though, in families.
Don't worry, love <3

yes, my oldest has a speech and was developmentally delayed. my second came out the same but has made quicker progress than my oldest. i think it is because my oldest helps him with talking and getting him to mimic his actions.

Both of my kids had speech delays and after DD worked with ECI for a year or less she was exactly where she was suppose to be but DS is still having trouble. DS was going to his speech therapist at the school he was going to be going to but we ended up moving and i didn't know who to call to get him in with someone who works with children with speech delays. I also think he has ADHD which keeps him from learning much, but he hasn't been diagnosed. Plus i didn't know they had a cutoff for pre k, so i'm scared i'm going to have to hold im back from kindergarten.
DS is 4 and DD is 3

call your local elementary school and ask for an eval. ask to speak to whoever deals with delayed/special kids

should I look in to an eval for my 15 month old? or do you think I should wait until 18 months?

I also wonder if his verbal delay is because he doesn't have a good "example" of verbal-ness in his older brother, ya know?

I just worry. If I can get him help as soon as possible, I want to. I want to help them be up to the fullest of their potential.

they should point you to the one that your child should attend. both of my kids started school before they turned 3 because i made sure the schools would help them. most schools want to help the kids so that they don't fall behind when they start with regular classes. my oldest is starting first grade in a week, and every year his progress is amazing. i can't wait for my youngest to go back, he is in eci classes, but the progress he has made over the summer with his speech therapist is amazing.
both of your kids should be able to be in school and get help if you want.

DD was 1 and DS was 2 when i had them evaluated, so i mean it wouldn't hurt. I know in TX ECI stopped at 3 and then they referred you to the school they'd attend and you'd go once a week or so and they would work on speech and a few other things.

Another problem my kids had was they talk in their own language, i don't know where they picked it up but that's how they used to and still talk at times.. So instead of using words every one understood they used words that they made up which eventually we picked up on and we still at times have to correct them.

That actually makes me really happy, i was really scared i wouldn't be able to enroll DS in kindergarten next year since i didn't enroll him in pre-k this year. I was scared he wouldn't meet the requirements for kindergarten. But i'll call first thing tomorrow morning and go from there. Thank you so much, because DH's family is really no help with this kind of stuff.

no problem, if you still have trouble after that let me know i will talk to my network here and ask who to get you in touch with down there. i live in a small community and i sometimes hate living in the country, but the elementary school down here has been beyond awesome.

Ok i'll do that for sure. When i asked the caseworker at the pedi's office she told me i could do my own evaluation and just place him in a school. She also gave me a booklet with numbers to call but when i called none of them couldn't actually help me, they just kept telling me to call this place and i just went in a circle.

My son is almost 5 with autism, developmentally he is around 2.5/3 in speech, motor, and emotional/social development.

My younger son is only 3 months but I feel myself watching him closely to make sure he is hitting his milestones but I also want him to be little as long as possible when it comes to crawling/walking things like that, so I talked to his pediatrician about it and she gave me a little booklet, put out by the CDC, that lists all the milestones and around when they should be hitting them, so far he is right on track or a little early in some areas. It goes from birth to 5 years and its helping a lot. Although it did help me realize that the signs were there for my oldest son from birth I just never knew.
