ADD and new med

posted 27th Aug
I wanted to hear from other moms who medicate their children for add/adhd.

My daughter started taking meds august 15th. Shes on metadate 10mg capsules (which I open and sprinkle on applesauce every morning)

I never really had an issue with her behavior. I mean she is very talkative and has more energy then my son but shes nothing like the child they describe at school.
After countless meetings and IEP adjustments I finally decided to give meds a try.
The only difference I see in her so far is that she is less talkative for the first half of the day and has lost her appetite for the first half of the day as well.
She is also going to start therapy soon to help her with some learning anxieties she has unfortunately developed and to help her learn some coping and attention skills. This was the specialists recommendation.
My questions,
How has your child responded to meds?
Am I the only Mom who doesnt deal with "issues" but gets countless issues reported at school?
How can I help her at school when shes never had an issue at home?

By the way shes going to be 10 next month and starting 4th grade also next month.

TIA!

SO was medicated for ADHD when he was a child. He eventually started selling his prescription to other students. anyway, just watching this topic out of curiousity.

I have heard about this since looking into these meds more. I know shes on something thats not usually abused. I wonder what it makes an average person feel like to take that stuff.

Don't have any advice as far as the medication is concerned. I kind of think our medical system would like everyone to be on something. But I won't get into it.
But I was going to suggest you add omega 3 supplements. Some research is finding EPA can reduce or eliminate ADD/ADHD symptoms. There are conflicting results, but there are no bad effects and lots of health benefits to supplementing with omega 3's, and it won't interact with any other medication.

DS started meds last year when he went to Pre-k at 5. He was 5, and diagnosed ADHD they atarted him on vivance (capsule) but DS would NOT take it i tried to open it and put it in his yogurt in the morning but he said he could taste it, on to perscription number 2/3 - he was placed on a 10 mg/5 mg of methylin, which work... sometimes   at that time he was also place on abilify.... i did not like the meds at all... I got frustrated with his Dr. and looked for ADHD pediatrician specialists and found a GREAT one!! She REFUSED to put him on the methylin and abilify again and started him on a daily 10 mg patch! I LOVE IT!! it delivers 1.5 mg of the course of 9 hrs throughout the day! its helps DS focus throughout the day and his behavior is amazing when he is on it! The ONLY downfall is that it messes with sleeping so when we go back in this Sept. I will be asking for some advice or somethign to help him fall asleep at night! The patch is called Daytrana!

he said he didn't like it and felt depressed. I think part of it was he knew people didn't like his behavior and gave him meds to change him, you know?

But apparently if you don't have ADHD it feels like your taking cocaine. Like it has the opposite effect

I dont really agree with the way meds are prescribe either

Thanks for the tip though. Doc did mention giving her vitamins with DHA in it but adding omegas cant hurt.

Glad you finally found something that works.
Im terrified to go through tons of meds. So far its going well but the true test will be when school starts.
The patch sounds so much easier but my insurance doesnt cover any patches
Thankfully shes been taking the meds without too much of a problem.

Thanks for the Link!

I thought in order to be diagnosed with ADHD they had to exhibit symptoms at home as well as at school.

Never knew that. She was diagnosed with ADD and an unspecified learning disability.
