Autistic child and changes

Ah, what a week, DS is 8 and started 3rd grade on Wed. Up till now he has been home schooled but we decided to start him into public school since he has been doing so great. He is high functioning, he does have problems handling his emotions. This week has been nuts, him dealing with changes are so hard. He is so excited to start school but at every turn he is either getting upset or crying. My heart breaks for him, this is so new and a big change in his schedule. I hope everything comes to place for him soon.

No, the kids are great with him. Thats one of the great things of going to a country school, it's still just a lot more than he's used to KWIM? He will get upset and cry over little things mostly, well they aren't little to him. He's very upset that we decided to have him stat out with three days a week and work up. He want;s five but I know that would be too much right off the bat. Any time things in his life change it is extremly hard on him.

  Well, hopefully he will be okay and it gets better soon!!

Mabe only going 3days a week is causing him more stress because it is disrupting his new ''schedule'' and throwing him off.....i have 2 children w/asd and it throws them out of whack when they have an odd day off of school (for a holiday or teacher work day)

Yeah, I kinda wish it didn't have to be that way but the teacher was pretty insistant on it.

i would go to the principle and discuss the situation.....every childs needs r different and its not the teachers place to ''insist'' that something will work better for your child just because it worked for others.

It's a country school so there is no principle, there are only 5 kids in the whole school. The superintendent was there for the meeting and she agreed with the teacher, I agreed also at the time. Then I thought, what happens when he's ready to up his days, then it'll start another transition. He goes in for his testing on Wed so I'm going to talk to the superintendent about it. This is OT but, do your kids like being naked? Not sure if it's just him or a autistic trait. Every time he gets the chance he's stripped down in the buff.

my kids w/asd are 11 & 12yrs old so they thankfully are out of the ''stripping'' stage (atleast in public) My son will strip down to his boxers as soon as he gets in the front door......

Jake does the same thing. So the teacher called me a few hours ago, last night a lady down the road who also home schooled her two boys came by and told her she is starting her boys in school on Monday. She hadn't even registered them yet, just dropped em in her lap. Plus the teacher had to move Jake's desk  . I took him down there and we explained everything and he could see where his desk was now. He had a panic attack  . Gosh this is so damn hard!

for the love of God , why did they move his desk?????? These educators obviously need to be educated themselves on ''specail needs'' children.....its not rocket science !

She has her degree in special education and is very good with Jake. She really had no choice, the two boys are in different grads so it screwed everything up. She has the younger kids in one groupand the older in another. She now has one child in every grade. The whole thing just sucks, I think he's okay with his placement now, he's in the same position, just in the other group of desks. She could have just kept him and switched everyone else lol, but that still would have changed the group. So she was effed either way. We are going to get a bunch of things to help him cope and sooth him. She got some partitions and gave him his own corner and got a weighted vest. He is going to take his favorite stuffie so that will help.

Extremely frustrating, for everyone involved. I'm going to just hide out by the school the next few days for like a hour to make sure everything is good. We live 15 miles from the school and it's a dirt road so it takes me like a good 25 minutes to a half hour to get there.
